Grabbing the Spotlight

GM John Lynch made some strange statements last week. If we didn’t know that Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan were BFFs and pulling on the same oar, one might think Lynch was puffing himself up at Shanahan’s expense.

Lynch was speaking about the trade for Jimmy Garoppolo and said “there were some days that Kyle Shanahan was like in mourning, because I think everybody knows his master plan was to have Kirk Cousins come in eventually.” Lynch also goes on to say how proud he is of Shanahan for coming to realize Garoppolo was the right guy to lead the franchise.

Innocent enough, perhaps. But it implies Lynch knew better than his HC about the QB position and his tone is more like a condescending father figure than an equal man-like substance.

It also seems like a breach of privacy to be describing the backstage emotions and thoughts of his supposedly equal partner.

Maybe it’s Lynch who doesn’t feel enough love coming his way. It’s Shanahan, afterall, who gets almost all the kudos for the rising fortunes of the team. Apparently Lynch wants to make sure everyone knows that HE was the guy who brought in Garoppolo, not Shanahan. And he did it despite Shanahan’s resistance.

As for Richard Sherman, I’m sorry. It’s hard enough trying to squeeze up some rah rah for the 49ers this coming season without completely bastardizing myself into rooting for Dickhead, too. I hope the guy gets burned so badly he’s booed off the field. He and his endless mouth do not belong here. It’s criminal trespass. There’s no way this guy can provide enough worth to offset his baggage.

Thought the same thing myself Skeebs, regarding the ‘mourning’ comment relative to Jimmy vs Capt Kirk.

Truth be told, Kirk on the open Market wouldn’t have required a 2nd RD Pick, if we really wanted to split hairs.
Whether Lynch is feeling discredited or, simply wants to sell the deal for Jimmy as his own, it opens the door to controversy.
Once again, shades of dysfunction come creeping back to mind from the halls of 4949.

When it comes to football, the Xs and Os, Lynch certainly carries his own water but, he’s wearing a suit these days, not a whistle, or a headset on Sundays.
Given his resumé as GM, he’s barely cut his teeth.
Real easy to look glamorous when you’re Picking in the Top 5.
He’s also much too close to the core itself, Jed.
Success, no matter the measure, is an adrenaline rush to Jed.

Let’s hope this isn’t a glimpse into the window pane of dysfunction, (yet again), that has consumed this FO since the York’s took the reigns.

I think you guys are reading way to much into it. It’ obvious that neither Lynch or KS knew very much about Jimmy. They had to find out just like everyone else.

  3. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

The full 5 games was an audition. For them to evaluate.

If he failed. Trade Jimmy and buy Kirk.

  4. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

It’s OK in that vain Winder, Jimmy was certainly an unknown from a performance perspective.
What Skeebs (and I) are suggesting, was the recent comments relative to Lynch wanting Jimmy and, Shanny expecting to acquire Kirk.
Granted, we all would agree that Jimmy came out of the blocks blazing.
    No complaints there.

I’m hoping that Lynch isn’t stoking derision in a relationship that needs an iron-clad bond.

  5. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Man, the Rams are definitely going for it this year: “Odell Beckham being pursued by LA Rams in possible trade for Giants dynamic wide receiver.”

  6. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

And this: “Ndamukong Suh reached agreement with Los Angeles Rams on a one-year, $14 million deal.”

  7. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Jesus the F-ing Rams really want it bad. I honestly didn’t think this year was gonna be the one we win the division and that is probably the case now. Barring injuries that is just too much fire power. We are really gonna have to draft smart. However it wouldn’t surprise me that we are in the OBJ hunt also.

  8. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I think Cousins throws a better deep ball than Jimmy at this point but I doubt he can compare to jimmy with those quick drop passes. Until we get a solid Oline we are gonna need to do a lot of those and that is where McKinnon should be a big help.

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Remember Aaron Donald held out last year and got a contract that pays him $8 mil this year. Now they sign Suh for $6mil more.

Beckham is holding out for a new contract and wants to be the highest paid WR in the league. That means about $19 mil plus a year which Tampa Bay just paid Mike Evans.

If this is what is happening they will try to win it all in a one year window because a year from now this won’t be suatainable with contracts of Gurley and Goff coming up for bigger payouts in the next 2 years.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If you believe in chemistry I wonder what somebody like Suh and possibly Beckham will do to the Rams locker room.

Donal actually held out through the fiorst game of last season. Donald is the 10th highest paid player on the team this year.
Rams wouldn’t give him an extension but somehow found the money to pay Suh.

  11. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

All about the Marketing in LA Bullit.
    Go BIG or, go home.
I don’t see Suh as the monster he once was in terms of talent.
He is, of course, a monster of dirty deeds.
That’s the more worrisome aspect of his presence in our Division I think.

He’s easily disarmed with the screen game however, which is something Shanny is likely to bolster, now that he has a QB with the ability to pull the trigger at any range.
I recall Harbaugh whamming the snot out of Suh with WR/TE motions.

He’s a deadly downhill bull rusher.
Not so much so when he has to turn and react to misdirection.

  12. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Bucs have $30mil ion salary invested in Adams and Desean Jackson which I find ridiculous.Talk about overpaying and underperforming.

Grossly underpaid is Antonio Brown who ranks as the 26th highest paid receiver at &7,895Mil a year.

Not sure why Beckham is threatening a holdout considering his health and lack of production last year. He’a going to be a malcontent for the rest of his career

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

OBJ is living off his highlight film IMO.
Josh Norman showed what it takes to get him off his game. Bully him.
Until he grows up, he’s going to go the T.O. route.
Long on talent, short on self control.
NYG are the completely wrong venue for his antics. Much too conservative to harbor his demands and, lack of maturity.
Someone will over-bid for his services I’m sure.

  14. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Rams and Eagles are living in that window of franchise QB still on rookie contract. First SEA, now LAR. Ouch! Smart 1st for LAR will be Vita Vea for their 3-4 D.

With Jimmy GQ we will have to live off a different model. Build through the draft, the strength of this team built from non-QB starters. FA talent on short-term contracts, perfect.

Brick by brick. April 26, 27 could be amazing.

Love the Jonathon Cooper pickup. Start with rebuild of OL. Trent Brown to IND makes sense to me. Their vertical passing game needs him bad. We need one or more of their 2nd’s.

  15. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Agreed Bakkentom – Want to get back into the 40s if at all possible.
Long drought between Picks 9 and 59.
Gotta hope for a suitor to slide back with if their coveted piece isn’t on the Board at 9.
I’d be OK with Vea too but not without sliding back.
Will Hernandez could fit the same scenario.

    http://insidethepylon.com/football-101/football-basics/2018/03/27/a-guide-to-identifying-defensive-fronts/

    Under

When I was a freshman at Carroll, I created a little method of deciphering between an Over and Under front in order to not embarrass myself in front of the upperclassmen in Offensive Line meetings. “Over 40, Under 50”. One way to tell if a defensive might be an Under front, is that it will look like a 50 (five man) defensive line because the Sam linebacker is up on the line of scrimmage.

However, the real for sure way to tell if it’s an Under front, is that the 1 technique defensive tackle is to the strong side. Under is the only front where a 1 technique will be to the strong side of the formation. This front has been made commonplace in the NFL by the Seahawks, Jaguars, Raiders, 49ers and Falcons among others. It creates more 1 on 1s with defenders and blockers than most fronts, and that puts more stress on the other offensive linemen to get to the linebackers, otherwise the linebackers have clear paths to make plays. Remember, if there is a 1 technique defensive tackle to the strong side (tight end side, usually) of the formation, it’s an Under.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So the Niners sign Jonathan Cooper from the Cowgurls.
Dallas has Joe Looney and Marcus Martin on their roster.
    Go figure.

  18. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Lynch/Shanahan saying that Ward will start OTAs at CB might be tipping the Niner draft pick. With the 9th pick they will take Minkah Fitzpatrick or Derwin James both who play safety although Fitzpatick is said to be versatile enough to play CB also just like “lurk” #42 Ronnie Lott.

  19. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    I’d love Minkah as a 9er Bullit.
Gotta hope he clears TB who are certainly in need of DB help and likely won’t join the QB frenzy with Winston on the payroll.

Made the same observation regarding Jerruh, Looney and Martin too.
He’s strapped for Cap Cash and, has his hands full with Dez.
To be rich and ignorant means never having to say you’re clueless I guess?
    Eff him anyway.

    Sideways too 😀

  20. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Another thought crossed my mind with Jimmy Ward being talked about lately.
Could they be buttering him up for Trade interest?
He’s making a boat-load of money on the 5th Yr option now, so I’d assume that would preclude an easy Deal elsewhere.
Especially with the Class of DBs coming next month.
I had a real rough time trimming them down for my own Wish List.

Good problem to have, when you’re looking to retool the position.

  21. robNo Gravatar says:

Interesting thought NJ . I’d laugh if we trade Ward and keep Eric Reid !

  22. WinderNo Gravatar says:

Ward’s problem is that he can’t stay on the field I think they will try to restructure or just trade him, probably for a draft pick.

  23. robNo Gravatar says:

Good Idea Winder . We need ammo to trade up in two IMO..
There will be good players in two but I think most if not all will be gone by 59. I think we have to get up closer to 40 !

  24. robNo Gravatar says:

Guy does a nice job with this

    http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/1813-post-free-agency-roster-analysis-offense/

Hope he does one on the defense too

  25. bullitNo Gravatar says:

For what it’s worth on NFL Network it was revealed that new Niner C Weston Richbueg has started 5 games against Suh and has not allowed a sack to Suh in those five games.

  26. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Put a couple of nasty Guards next to him and you’ve got the Interior OL covered too Bullit.
I put great value on Reps and Splits at that position too.

  27. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Slow time coming up. Draft 4 weeks away.

When journalists look back on this offseason, we won’t come out on top. Our franchise QB in trade during last season, won’t count. CLE, LAR, and others ranked ahead of us.

Am glad we kept bullets in the magazine. The big holes got their FA patches, edge/CB/IOL and RB better suited to making plays in space and in passing attack.

Draft board is key. Never know which players drop. Finally a CS that can coach players up, finding players that fit the scheme, and healthy ACL’s.

These guys can find day 3 draftee’s that can be starters that are raw and just need time.

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Decision day appears to be Apr 12th for Ruben Foster.
The DA has reserved a time this on the court’s calendar.
The way this seems to work is the DA will either come forth with charges or there will be no comment if there are no charges. So no news is good news for Foster.

Foster still has the weed charges to deal with in Alabama and then he’ll wait for the league’s disciplinary ruling.

OTAs start on Apr 14. Will Foster be there?

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Here you go rob, this time the D.

    http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/1815-post-free-agency-roster-analysis-defense/

Mentioned that this is a weak class for edge rushers. May want to wait for the better class in 2019, includes Bosa’s brother.

    Am all for that.

Will our undersized MLB have the same success.

  31. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit here’s one of the Sleeper WRs I’m targeting.
    Possibly Late/UDFA?
    I like his speed.
Kind of ‘tweener for me between Split/Slot –

Tre’Quan Smith, WR, Central Florida Height: 6-2 Weight: 210
    40-Time: 4.49 (6.97 Cone) (12 Reps) (37.5″ Vert) –

Read lots of hype for Marcell Ateman being on our radar but I can’t buy a 4.6/40 and 34″ Vert.
    Late RDer? Maybe.
He did play 51 games so I’m guessing he’s durable.

Marcell Ateman, WR, Oklahoma S Height: 6-4 Weight: 216
    40-Time: 4.62 (7.07 Cone) (13 Reps) (34″ Vert) –

Like these guys further down the Board too at WR –

Daurice Fountain, WR, (Slot) Northern Iowa Height:6-1 Weight:210
    40-Time: 4.50 – (23 TD)

“Giants have traded WR Odell Beckham to the 49ers for a 2018 2nd round draft pick and a 2019 1st round draft pick.”

    Wow.

    Skeebers

Good one until I remembered what day today was. Happy Easter!

  35. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

I suppose this could be a Schefter April Fools’ joke.

  36. WinderNo Gravatar says:

In a way I hope the Rams do get him. It will just make the need to get to Goff even more important. Gonna be a lot of Hollywood swingin going on this year.

  37. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

False alarm on Trent Brown. May be uncomfortable.

Extend him now. Give him a contract sizeable enough to give him his best value to a team like Indy. Pass pro for a star franchise QB. Average run blocker for a power gap scheme.

Trade when a very good young RT is on team, or very capable bridge RT is found.

Is his pass pro worth a high 2nd or 1st. Indy would give us their highest 2nd in a heartbeat for a safe and healthy Luck, accept nothing less.

  38. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Patriots are trading WR Brandin Cooks and a fourth-round pick to LA Rams for the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and a sixth-round pick.”

Rams are definitely going all in this year.

  39. WinderNo Gravatar says:

I guess OBJ is out of the picture.
