Shopping Spree

The Rumor Mill has been spitting out a lot of juicy tidbits the past week, as the FA period nears. Big name cuts, trade scenarios real and ridiculous, and a promise from GM John Lynch that we fans should keep our eyes open for a slew of signings.

With 16 or so 49er free agents, the roster cupboard is mighty bare, so we can take Lynch at his word. There will be bodies coming our way.

One that won’t darken our doors is Colin Kaepernick, who opted out of his contract last Friday, making him an immediate Free Agent with a one week head start on any other FA QBs to be, able to grovel for a job with any team that wants him. So far, no takers.

People around the league are lavishing praise on the Niners’ new GM and HC. It’s possible this praise is earnest and sincere. It’s possible this praise doesn’t mean a hill of beans. And it’s also possible it falls into the category of Arizona HC Bruce Arians’ 2016 preseason depiction of the 49ers as the “sleeper” team in the NFC West. They slept, alright. All the way to 13 straight losses.

As of today, the team has zero QBs under contract for the coming season, but by this time next week, there will likely be two or three signed for our amusement. Matt Schaub figures to be one of them, if for no other reason than helping Kyle Shanahan install his offense. If there’s any other reason he’s here, 2017 will be another long year for all of us.

In the meantime, since the 49ers have needs virtually everywhere on the team, they are floated in every trade rumor and FA signing in the league. In two more days, we’ll see which, if any, of those rumors are true. This could very well be the most active FA period in 49er history.

Hopefully this week we see things starting to take shape. It should be a fun year no matter what.

Can an outside zone be phased in. This is the backbone of the KS offense. No mention in this article or the comments yet on power-gap versus outside zone and the demands on OL.

    http://www.ninersnation.com/2017/3/7/14742802/2017-nfl-free-agency-preview-offensive-line-chargers-release-dj-fluker

Can Garnett and Trent Brown handle this. Can coaching convert them. KS knows everything on this.

Cannot wait for FA and draft. Clean slate at QB and WR. Build from the ground up on O.

  3. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

No mention of 49ers interest in this guy. This writer is not connected or dumb?

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/03/07/rick-wagner-poised-for-big-payday-in-free-agency/

Is this guy the best outside zone RT in FA? Ravens do ZBS but may not want to pay for him. Bidding high for him. If Zeitler and Wagner are the best out there then pay them. Move Beadles to C or release?

  4. NoFearNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, “People around the league” are always right, and always wrong. They love everybody and every team’s moves are genius. And then they play for real and it all goes to shit, again.

Shanahan’s “system” cost a high-powered roster a wasted year just to learn. Imagine it starting from zero.

On the plus side three of the team’s biggest anchors (Shit7torm, Kelly, Baalke) are no longer dragging the Niners to the bottom.

Maybe start the rebuild with that McCaffrey guy’s kid. The elder player did alright for the elder coach, IIRC.

And the Raiders looking for a big night out every night. That should work!

I must really antagonize certain types on this blog. For bridge QB’s it is QB1 Cutler and QB2 Gabbert. QBOTF found in 2017(3rd or 4th rd) or 2018 draft (1st).

No on Cousins. KS will develop a brainy, athletic draft pick with a big arm. He wants a natural thrower. Cousins not affordable.

Another farewell to last year’s crew: “49ers released S Antoine Bethea.”

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    I referenced this statement before:

Although Cleveland has a ton of cap space, that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to attract any free agent they want. About half the league has at least $35 million in available cap space, which is plenty to sign one or two big free agents. Over the next few weeks, we’ll dig deeper into some potential offseason moves for the Browns, what the free agent class looks like, and more.

How successful can we be in FA. We have a lot of day 3 picks. Steel yourselves. Could be bad this year.

  8. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We have a lot of needs so will be in a lot of bidding. At worse we force bids higher to deplete the cap currency available to others.

The third most is Jacksonville. Already have a lot of roster talent that underperformed. May let new coaching staff bring out the existing talent first and opt to be smaller players in FA this year.

  9. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Been there, done that. Thanks CLE.

Perfect storm. KS needs time to pick and develop QBOTF. Cap space around 100 million. CLE shackled with moneyballers. Better coaching staff. More dynamic offense.

    Hoyer QB1, Pryor WR1, Garcon WR1.

FO wants to win and outbid. Hope above happens and Zeitler RG and Wagner RT are next.

Only negative is high tax rates and looney leftism. Look at the map. For these guys CA 13.3% versus OH 5%. Cali is a one party state and needs to feed the public employee unions and illegal aliens so that rate only goes up.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners also set to sign ex Seahag/Raiduh LB., Malcolm Smith.

The list of guys that will sign is impressive.

Biased that Goodwin is a Texas Longhorn but he is a football player with world class speed and an Olympic long jumper.

  18. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Hoyer is a good bridge QB.
Garcon is similar to Crabtree which was one of Baalke’s biggest mistakes letting Crabtree walk for #3 mil and hoping his pick Patton would be able to take his place.

Patton has been very underwhelming catching 1 TD pass in his four seasons as a Niner.

  19. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

A lot of turnover this year and installing a new offense and whole new defensive scheme. I suspect it will be a bumpy ride integrating all the new people and new schemes. We may come out the other side a better team but it may take a full year and change or even two.

If it does, will Jed and his creatures in the FO be able to resist the urge to start the same old shit? I fear the toxic wasteland in our FO more than I fear the wasteland that has been our roster of late.

Only time will tell but I am not honestly able to be too optimistic given the track record of the Yorks. If anyone can f**k this up, they will find a way. Even if the roster is better I cannot see more than 5 or 6 wins this first year.

  20. winderNo Gravatar says:

Grump- if we can pull 6 wins this year and we look like a football team I would consider that a successful year. It is gonna take awhile but it looks like we have a hungry GM/HC and I think that is what it will take for anything to work. Jed just better back the F-off.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Hoyer to sign 2 year contract with $10 mil guaranteed at a base of $6 mil a year with incentives of $3 mil more per year.

    Basically backup QB money.

  22. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The difference with Lynch FO and the Baalke regime is night and day.
Last season showed you that Baalke basically sat free agency out
with top five cap dollars to spend allowing the dumpster fire to consume the whole complex.

Baalke was waiting for guys like Marcus Martin to fullfill “their potential”. Ignoring the need at WR and hoping that Torrey Smith would justify the big bucks paid to him and that his draft pick Quinton Patton would emerge in year four doomed the team to failure.

As time goes on Baalke’s failings will become more evident
and moment he won that power struggle over Harbaugh was the day the Niners started their downward spiral.

Scot McCloughan fired by the Redskins. Saw a recent picture of him. He looks terrible. I read an article a few years ago about McCloughan, in his own words, “Liking a beer once in a while.” The way he’s aged since leaving the 49ers he’s been boozing hard. Now that’s a disease. Aldon Smith? That’s pretty clearly CTE.

When a dude has millions at stake and can’t keep it together…. that’s a brain injury. Too many old racist white dudes have, in the past, written behavior like Aldon’s off to ethnicity and maybe a broken home. But the reality is, a lot of these guys, probably even O.J. Simpson, have CTE.

Oh, and the 49ers will play next year….. and they’ll really, really suck. Brian Hoyer passes to Pierre Garcon… and the one guy in the stands cheers….

Brian Hoyer to Pierre Garcon….. Jesus.

  30. winderNo Gravatar says:

spit, you are so full of it. You don’t know if Aldon has cte, he may just be as stupid as he seems. Some people just shouldn’t drink.

  31. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

The dismissal of McCloughan was so over the top and clearly a personal trash job that you have to wonder if there’s a lot more going on. I wouldn’t trust anything Snyder and Bruce Allen have to say. McCloughan probably lost a power/meddling struggle with Allen. Sound familiar?

  32. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Spitoon

    There you go again.
To keep defending Aldon Smith and then interject OJ as a victim shows how rotted you brain has become.

Can’t help someone like Aldon who just won’t stay out of trouble.

Stop using CTE as a convenient excuse for bad behavior. That’s not fair for those who truly has this disorder.

  33. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Maybe Spit’s got CTE. It would explain a lot.

  34. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Report: Kirk Cousins says ‘I’m going to be a 49er’ eventually.”

  35. SpitbloodNo Gravatar says:

Did you guys hear that Colin Kaepernick won the Len Eshmont award? Oh yeah, this is an old racist white dude blog. That got zero ink here. I wonder why.

  36. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Actually, it was discussed at length here, but you missed it. Probably because you spent all of that week memorizing “old racist white dude blog,” which you’ve repeated here about a 100 times – a sure sign of CTE confused and repetitive mumbling.

  37. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Kirk Cousins will not negotiate a long-term deal with the team as long as Bruce Allen is the team president.”

  38. SpitbloodNo Gravatar says:

Actually, I missed it because your blog is irrelevant.

  39. winderNo Gravatar says:

Ok spit, name me a blog that is relevant. Blogs are for anything you want them for. And, it’s always good to see ya. Even if I am an old white dude.

  40. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Paid a lot for Garcon versus Pryor.

Seems like a WR1 in the draft is coming. Garcon as performer but also mentor. KS probably demands receiver adjustments and must be in sync with QB. Lot of learing for all WR’s.

Garcon is exiting his prime years. My guess is the above that added to his contract.

  41. winderNo Gravatar says:

I am a little surprised we haven’t addressed the Lines. The TE’s look to be a huge upgrade so maybe our OL and DL is in better shape than we thought.

  42. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Still have 70 mil or so. OL next. Still have to think edge and WR1 a priority for #2 and #34.

  43. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    Got this from cohn:

    LT: Joe Staley, John Theus
    LG: Zane Beadles
    C: Daniel Kilgore, Alex Balducci
    RG: Joshua Garnett,
    RT: Trent Brown, Norman Price

How many are able in KS’s outside zone run game. Garnett currently has not shown lateral movement needed and TBrown too big?

OL needs tweaking next. Balducci graded high in this zbs movement test. How is the older Beadles for KS’s needs.

  44. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

1st RDers are starters by mid year 1st season.

2nd and 3rd RDers by second season should be capable of starting.

So IMHO we should aim for WR1 and edge rusher in first two rounds.

Do we make a big play for Dontari Poe or Brandon Williams. Very disappointed Zeitler gone.

Very good first week. Hoyer, Garcon, etc. help get O brought up to speed.

  45. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

    http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/nfl-draft/188309-how-free-agency-impacted-draft/page2/

    Needs as I see it:

    1- CB
    2- DE
    3- LB
    4- RB

As for Fournette. No. Just no. Too much injury risk. Too heavy. Didn’t test well. He has way too much bust potential. No chance a RB is worth the 2nd overall.

I’d go Jamal Adams if we didn’t have Reid, Tartt and Ward at Safety which leaves Lattimore as the safest player with the highest upside who fills a huge need. Run some tape on Lattimore. I can’t remember a better press corner than him coming out in the past 10 years. Stick him on a #1 wideout and let him do his thing. Dare teams to throw his way. It won’t turn out well.

    CB- Marshon Lattimore
CB- Rashard Robinson – Tramaine Brock
Slot- K’Waunn Williams – Will Redmon
SS- Eric Reid – Jaquiski Tartt
    FS- Jimmy Ward

That is a nice looking secondary

  46. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Any chance we trade for Kirk Cousins? (Chuck Vanemburgh)
Would you consider trading (Arik) Armstead with picks as part of a trade for Cousins? (@slowrunner33)

A: You didn’t think I’d get through a mailbag without talking about Cousins did you? While the latest on the embattled Washington quarterback is that he’s staying put this year, I’m not buying it. Cousins apparently doesn’t want to be with the organization anymore, and the franchise has nothing to gain by paying $24 million to a quarterback that will sign elsewhere in 2018. Cousins wants to be reunited with Shanahan in San Francisco, and the 49ers want him. The issue here is that Washington owner Daniel Snyder has a strained relationship with the Shanahans, and doesn’t want to hand Kyle his starting quarterback. I believe that, at some point, Snyder will come to his senses and ultimately agree to a deal.

Now the compensation for Cousins is another story. Some would argue that the 49ers should offer a one-sided Michael Corleone type deal, and tell Snyder to take it or leave it, knowing they’ll get him in 2018 anyway. A lot can happen in a year though, and if the Niners feel Cousins is a decade-long answer for them at the most important position in sports, they should be aggressive. While a swap of first-round picks would probably be a must, the Niners may not want to add any additional picks. That’s where a player who may or may not fit the new system, maybe someone like Armstead, could sweeten the deal a bit.

Al Sacco has been covering the 49ers since 2013 and has had his work used by national outlets such as ESPN and USA TODAY. In addition to his writing duties, Al is also the co-host of the No Huddle podcast presented by 49ers Webzone. 47. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

A lot of talk about trading for Cousins. We have the money and am open to it. But only if WASH has lost their leverage. Swapping 1st’s and deal Armstead would be worst case.

Then need an OL that can execute outside zone and protect Cousins. Absolutely must protect that investment.

Less risky is going with Hoyer and develop a QBOTF from the draft.

  48. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Just remember, with KS and barring major injuries we will not be drafting high enough for the top QB’s in 2018.

Safest approach is let KS develop the QBOTF. Cousins is already developed and we still have the money to do the swap. Or develop a Gabbert.

Go ahead and phucking laugh dimwits. KS play design creates seperation for at least one of the target’s if the QB has the brains to command the O and move through progressions after post snap reading of D.

Or develop a 2nd to 4th RD pick. Cousins was the 4th in the same draft that WASH wasted on RG3. Brady was a 6th, Romo a UDFA, whatever with a KS.

  49. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Would you trade Cousins for Joshua Garnett and Arik Armstead. There are the two 1st RD’s right there.

Lots of reasons for WASH to do the deal this offseason. Why risk Cousins getting hurt. He wants out and picked KS and SF as the best and only???? destination. Or Cousins having a bad year and harming his trade value.

Having both Defo Buckner and AA on DL is not a stout run D. A swap of #2 and #17 and AA may seal it. Feasible?? Give it a shot. A franchise D player is going to be there at #17.

    Carlos Watkins DT Clemson 6-3/309
    Montravius Adams DT Auburn 6-4/304

  59. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

I would have spent on Zeitler and Wagner.

Have to trust KS on Pryor. How able or how fast can he pick up on the KS system. He was cheap at 8 million. Good reason or WASH fell into a great deal.

Splurge in FA are for teams on the cusp for playoffs. Content with our mediocre FA haul that probably gives us no worse than a top 15 pick next year. Let us see how badly the roster under performed first.

  60. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Biggest problem for next year: Jed and his whole family still draw breath.

Second biggest: The O-line is a mismatch to the offensive system KS wants. At least two players (Garnett and Trent) need to be replaced. That means turnover in guys on the field, which means a year of suck as they learn to communicate and play together.

Note that it matters less who you plug in, than having consistency with rights right for the system. Spending first round picks might or might not help down the line, but it will mean nothing in the short term.

5-11 is about the best I can see. 4-12 sounds more likely.
