Broncos 24, Panthers 10

So that’s it. Another NFL season hits the pavement in search of its place in history.

Super Bowl 50 looks like a perfect candidate for the “Just Win, Baby” division. In the “Defense Wins Championships” category.

One of my favorite moments in the game featured our old friend Ted Ginn butter-fingering yet another third down pass, this one on the Broncos’ ten yard line, then throwing up his hands looking for a PI flag. Good old Teddy. Always coming up small when you need him the most.

Cam Newton tossed away a lot of the charm he’d displayed during the season with his late game melt down. Poor losers don’t get much sympathy in this world. And he’ll have some awkward moments trying to explain to his teammates his lack of effort on the late game, season killing fumble.

There were a lot of famous 49ers featured during the two week build up to the game, but all of them were from the Eddie Debartolo era. The York era has produced virtually nothing, and what little success it has achieved is banned from the premises.

And here we are, so far removed from contending for a championship that it’s difficult to muster much enthusiasm for the long offseason ahead of us. Or even arm ourselves with last year’s passionate outrage. The franchise is counting on Chip Kelly to restore the prestige thrown away last year by our petty, clueless owner. Right now, that seems a lot more like desperate hope than practical reality.

Welcome to the 2016 season, Outsiders. We’ll do our best to make it entertaining, provocative, and insulting to a few chosen targets.

Aints cut one of their All Pro Guards. He’s 32 but might be a solution to a leaky line. Mathis helped stabilize the Bronco Oline and Evan might do the same for whoever signs him

Just like every year all the DCs in the NFL will study what the Denver D did to Carolina. Cam has to to come up with something new. Denver’s run defense just shut Carolina down.

Wade Phillips is a helluva DC.

Oh oh is Skeebs getting all wobbly with that dreaded ‘hopefulness’ affliction I’ve struggled with? Yes he claims “it’s the franchise” that’s indulging in “desperate hope” to deflect attention from himself but still…Look man you find unreasonable optimizing going on, you give me a call/text/email I’ve been there. Cunning, baffling, sinister this hope addiction is serious. You know a relapse can happen at any time during the off season with no on field evidence to bring sobriety. I’m here for you man. One day at a time.

Just remember the 12 Steps of Recovery from Hope Addiction which begin: “We admitted we were powerless over our hope addiction and the Yorks – that our lives had become unmanageable much like the Niner OL”. Face it we have a solid history of losing with these guys.

Other teams are cutting players they can’t afford or not in their plans.
Why is Baalke hanging on to Brooks who’ll cost close To $10 mil this year.
He probably has been here 2 years too long and should have been traded or cut a while back.
Tamba Hali is a free agent and made $6+ mil last season. He is a year older than Brooks at 32 but has been more productive.

    Brooks has to go.

DFrom Niners nation here are the Niner draft picks for 2016

    1. First round: Own pick – No. 7
    2. Second round: Own pick – No. 6 (37 overall – normally would be 38, but Patriots were stripped of first round pick))
    3. Third round: Own pick – No. 5 (68 overall)
    4. Fourth round: Own pick – No. 7 (overall for this and remaining picks depends on potential third round comp picks)
    5. Fifth round: San Diego Chargers (2015 draft-day trade) – No. 3
    6. Fifth round: Own pick – No. 6
    7. Sixth round: Dallas Cowboys (2015 draft-day trade) – No. 3 – 49ers traded a sixth for Hodges. There is no word yet if it was their pick or this Cowboys pick
    8. Sixth round: Denver Broncos (Vernon Davis trade) – No. 32

Potential comp picks (via Over The Cap)

    9. Fourth round: Mike Iupati
    10. Fifth round: Perrish Cox
    11. Sixth round: Dan Skuta
    12. Sixth round: Frank Gore

Damning statement by T. J. Ward, “No, we read them like a book”.

Carolina O had two weeks to lay out a new gameplan. Keep the D guessing. Never happened. OC or QB failure.

  7. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Wonder what it would be like if Johnny Manziel and Aldon Smith got an apartment together.

  8. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Good one, Winder.

  9. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I have to wonder just how much the Kaep/Aldon/Nessa Love Triangle played into the final demise of Aldon?
If we opt out with Kaep, I’d be curious to see how Aldon progresses with his personal demons and the suspension he will serve.

He will be a FA, with obvious concerns attached.
Can’t ignore his pass rushing talents, so long as he can get his life together away from football.
Might he still be an option for us, if all things align properly?

  10. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    Raiders own Aldon’s rights, NJ.

  11. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

How long was he originally signed there Skeebs?

  12. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Not sure. He was under contract when suspended, so whenever he’s reinstated, if he ever is, he’ll still have Raider time left to fulfill. Plus he liked being there. Doubt he’ll ever be back here.

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Curious situation on both sides.
That whole Nessa thing seems to have some serious implications attached to it.
Either way, this Draft is loaded with Defensive talent which could help us in that regard.
See how the 7 Pick materializes when the time comes.
Be nice if we could forego the QB selection there in favor of another area of need.

  14. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Just hope they stay away from Bradford in FA.
Spend some of the Cap surplus to extend our own where warranted and, get some help in the trenches.
Chip is actually a detriment to guys on the Defensive side of FA.
Not many happy campers in Philly who played Defense for him.
His style of Offense doesn’t do them many favors.

  15. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Hope he looks to improve his TOP stats with us, instead of his usual record breaking pace of 3-and-outs.

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Aldon would apply for reinstatement for mid Nov.
That takes the 2016 season off the table.
Niners have to move on from Aldon as it seems being a member of the Niners was Aldon’s kryptonite.

  17. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Which is why I’m hoping we pass on the QB at 7 Bullit.
Buckner might be worthy there or, Trade down and look for Ogbah?
    Have to replace Aldon.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Be nice to get Billings as well IMO.
Plenty of DTs coming out so, I wouldn’t reach for one too early unless he’s a difference maker in the Scouts’ eye.
Pass rushers are the coveted commodity however.

  19. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Can’t wait to see the Combine Invitee List also –
Apparently being delayed due to the new mandate on arrest records?
The kid I mentioned recently, DE James Cowser from So UT is a guy I want to see.
Kid posted some sick stats. 42.5 sacks in 48 games played.
If he has any athleticism to him, he might be a nice OLB candidate.
Projecting him in RD6 at this point.

  20. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Emmanuel Ogbah amassed 28 sacks in 39 games played for OKSU.
By comparison, Bosa grabbed 26 sacks in 41 games.
Both these guys are very similar in measurables as well.

If they opt to pass on Jaylon Smith/Myles Jack, OLB Darren Lee from OH St would be a nice alternative.
There too, I want to see how Lee moves through drills in Indy.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Top 50 UFAs

Baalke needs to re-sign Ian Williams.
I think Olivier Vernon DT is worth taking a look at and also
    Brandon Brooks OG.
Both Jeffery and Sanu are FAs at WR.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/ranking-the-top-50-nfl-players-slated-to-become-free-agents/ar-BBpjuA6?ocid=spartandhp#page=1

  22. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Yes – Like Vernon from Miami and, they’re Cap strapped.
Likely they could attempt to restructure Suh to free up some bucks to keep him though?

Lukewarm on Ian only because there has been an extended injury history with him.
Especially with all the young DTs available this year, it’s a toss-up for me with Ian and TJ-E.
Be nice if Alex Mack vacates his deal in Cleveland too.
Always liked Sanu as well. Tough kid.

Good position to be in for us with numerous Picks, and money, at our disposal.

Biggest question will be how Chip treats the QB position.
That likely dictates the Pick at 7.

  23. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Think I mentioned another Rutgers kid, WR Leonte Carroo.
He could be an option if the red flag surrounding his assault charges prove to be frivolous.
I’m all for restocking the Defense as this crop is strongest on that side of the ball.
As always, it comes down to slotting and getting into position to grab the guys they’re looking for.
For me, the pass rusher is the key ingredient.
Don’t think Von Miller will see the FA Market either.
Denver will do all they can to retain him I’m sure.

  24. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Curious to see if Bruce Irvin gets a deal from Seattle too.
Still wouldn’t rule out the NYJ, as they have some serious decisions to make with Mo, Sheldon and ‘Big Snacks’ Harrison.
Money can only go so far, especially when they’re attempting to retain Fitzpatrick.

Plenty of scenarios waiting to unfold.

  25. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

2 guys we could potentially offer up to NYJ is Kaep and AD.
If Kaep doesn’t pass the physical by April 1 they likely keep him just to hold his rights.
If he’s hell bent on moving on, it should be on Baalke’s terms, not his.
    Get something for him.
His Contract is very team friendly, whether in SF, or elsewhere.

  26. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Mo would be worth the FA money and, likely improve on the lacking numbers, from Ahmad Brooks.
Time to get younger and recast some of these Contracts.
I think Boone will move on as well.
See where it all goes over the next couple of months.

  27. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Could be a good chance of looking into your guy Josh Doctson from TCU over Sanu too?
Can’t sneeze at 34 TDs worth of production.
    Could see him in RD2?
With the potential to Trade Comp Picks looming, Baalke could make some slotting moves up, or back, with willing partners on Draft Weekend.

  28. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Corey Coleman from Baylor might be a nice piece for Chip’s Offense as well?
Little on the small side but, he’s put up some nice numbers in a pass happy Offense at Baylor.
He, and Bralon Addison are pretty similar.
We know Chip will have Addison on the ‘Duck’ radar too.

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

What this team needs is help. Baalke can’t keep stockpiling future choices and allow teams to leapfrog the Niners.
For instance they used a 5th to draft Pinion and traded Lee for a future 6th or 7th.
IMO Pinion was average to mediocre at best. You could bring in 5 guys in for a tryout and find equal value. I still think it’s a wasted pick.

I’ll let Kelly evaluate the draftable QBs. If he doesn’t think
one is worthy of the pick I would look to Treadwell at WR or Myles Jack.
I am wary of taking 2 Dlineman from Oregon with my first pick in consecutive drafts. Third pick in the 2013 draft was DL Dion Jordan out of Orefgon who has been a complete bust.

  30. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

What is the story with Jimmy Graham? Released or traded. Can we get him. Should we?

  31. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Mitchell Schwartz RT, Ladarius Green TE, and Travis Benjamin WR. Worth considering?

Olivier Vernon a lot of money to pay for 4-3 DE to OLB project. We have the money and cannot sit on the sidelines.

  32. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

With Brooks and Kap gone, a big splash in the FA market for Mo Wilkerson justified. Preferable for a trade of AD when Wilkerson franchise tagged.

Wilkerson makes other 10 better. Multiplier effect elevates all those cheap contracts on D.

How about a trade down of #7 for an extra 2nd. Can bundle to get back in 1st. Ogbah OLB and Conklin/Decker/Coleman RT both in the 1st.

The boost in talent with Wilkerson, Ogbah, and one of the top 3 RT’s would be a giant step out of the abyss.

  33. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If Kelly and the FO decide to keep Kap I think there’s a reasonable chance that Gabbert beats him out for the position with his hard work. Gabbert is already studying film of the Ego’s and Duck offenses under Kelly.

Kap has never been involved in an open QB competition and things might not go the way he likes simply because of his immaturity and his arrogance to handle situations that don’t go his way.

If beaten out and relegated to second string that’s $12 million sitting on the bench holding a clipboard.

Think Kelly’s real evaluation will be to see if Kap is willing to put in the classroom work and film study to understand Chip’s offense. If there is the slightest hesitation to change, I’d try to trade him or release him.

  34. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Cam Newton says he is a sore loser. He says show me a good loser and that makes him a loser. What Cam should concern himself with isd what goes around comes around. Cam likes to get into people’s faces and show them up when he’s winning. The other side of that is you’ll get the same treatment exponentially when the shoe is on the other foot.
If you can’t handle that, then you are a big crybaby.

  35. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Cam is trying to say that his not attempting to recover his fumble didn’t cost the Panthers the game. What game was he watching? Denver recovered the ball inside the Panther 10 and the score went from down six to down 14.
Newton further used the excuse that a lot of QBs don’t try to make tackles on pick sixes for fear of injury. Another flimsy excuse. It’s the Super Bowl Cam and with 4 minutes left ib=n a one score game you do what’s necessary to win. If you get hurt you have 7 months to recover.
After his own team mates see the fumble play at least half of them if not more will question Cam’s dedication to winning, his leadership because they are hearing excuses rather than contrition. Basically Cam Newton blew it and there’s no hiding from it.

  36. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Not to mention, Cam couldn’t pick up the pace when it came to making quicker reads.
He’s so used to making a sandwich in the pocket he couldn’t adjust.
He typically waited for LBs to drift downfield, then takeoff to keep the sticks moving.

Total meltdown on the biggest stage.
    No excuses.
Own it and Man up to your opponent.

    Denver wanted it more.

  37. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

I’ve also read that GM Dave Gettleman in Carolina doesn’t put high priority on OTs in early RDs.
How does that work against a fierce pass rush?
Not so well when it mattered most.
They’ve relied much too heavily on Cam getting out of trouble because of his size.

  38. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Chip puts a premium on quick decision makers and accuracy.

Not going to favor Kaep if he doesn’t take his career more seriously than he has to date.

  39. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Kap cannot justify 12 million a year with his QB skills and performance. Or even a backups contract.

FO needs until April 1 for him to be deemed healthy so he can be cut. Lawyers can haggle for an injury settlement.

He lacks the smarts, discipline, and QB 101 skills. Enough has been wasted on him.

  40. robNo Gravatar says:

“On behalf of my family, the San Francisco 49ers organization and our Faithful fans around the world, I would like to congratulate my uncle, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., on his selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” said CEO Jed York. “There could be no more appropriate setting for this honor to be bestowed on him than during the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl in the region to which he delivered five Lombardi Trophies. Uncle Eddie’s impact on the game of football runs much, much deeper than simply the championships won by this franchise. He is the best owner in the history of the NFL because of the culture he created and how it still impacts the game to this day. Just walking through the city with him this week, you could see the love that remains for him from his former players, those his teams competed against, and fans from around the league. I think I speak for them all when I say, congratulations Mr. D. We love you.”

  41. robNo Gravatar says:

    Kap will be just fine

“Yea, that was disappointing because nobody fights for their team like Colin Kaepernick,”. He is a competitior at the very highest level, very similar to the two quarterbacks you’re going to watch in the Super Bowl in Cam Newton and Peyton Manning
“He’ll flourish,” former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday morning during an appearance at Moscone Center leading up to Super Bowl 50. “He’s a great talent and one of the ultimate competitors, so he’ll flourish”

  42. robNo Gravatar says:

    I want Emmanuel Ogbah
Anybody here like Joey Bosa ?

  43. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Bosa is the consensus top DE in this class Rob.
    Likely a top 3 Pick.
Given that projection, I look toward guys we could find after him.
Ogbah would be my first option to Bosa but, 7 might be too high?
    Slide back maybe?
    We’ll see…

  44. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Giants released OG Geoff Schwartz and OT Will Beatty. Schwartz is good, from KC. Injured? Do we make a play for him.

Two weeks away from the combine and a weekend of watching guys run and do drills in their underwear.

  49. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Believe it or not Bullit I enjoy the Combine.
Especially for teams like ours running 3-4 schemes.
The better athletes at DE for example, can often transition to OLB roles.
Anxious to see if the kid from So UT, James Cowser gets an invite.
If he can show some athleticism, he might make a great late RD Pick for us as an OLB, to add to his ridiculous TKL/Sack numbers.

I think Denver proved how a dominating Defense can stifle a high powered Offense.
Similar to what we did under Harbaugh during our recent Playoff/SB runs.
The Combine Invitee List has been late in arriving.
Probably due to the recent announcements regarding background checks?

  50. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Until Chip can get his scheme implemented, we’d be wise to fortify the Defense.
This Draft Class is much stronger on Defensive talent as well.
FA will likely dictate the direction we go with the Draft Board too.

GBN posted their Top 100 List.
Ogbah is sitting at the end of RD1, by their evaluations.
All rests on Pick 7, as to whether Chip wants the QB there I guess?
If they opt to take a project QB, I’d take a guess at Prescott or Doughty in the Mid RD area.
I’d be completely comfortable with the BPA on the Defensive side at 7 otherwise.

Last year the Niners coaching staff lacked total imagination.

Since Hayne is a rugby player he should be a decent punter.
You line Hayne up in certain punting situations where the defense would have to account for him as a runner also.
4th and 3 plays would make his running threat real and change
    the receiving team’s perspective.

Unfortunately nothing creative out of Tomsula.

  55. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Feb 16 – Mar 1 is window for designation of franchise players. Expect Mo Wilkerson to be tagged.

Mar 9 FA starts. Late Feb is the combine.

I assume Jed embarrassed for what his ego and stupidity has rendered this team. He has gone on record in saying TB has a full checkbook for FA money to be spent if warranted.

Top FA’S get taken early. Give TB and Jed about a month and a half to see if they are for real.

  56. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I agree it would not be a bad idea to sign Geoff Schwartz as a FA since the Giants released Schwartz outright.
The new Niner Oline coach is familiar with Schwartz as he was the Giant’s Oline coach for the last decade.

Schwartz is 29 years old and earned $1.8 mil last season. Baalke paid Pears almost a million more for last year.

This is a no brainer and signing two Olineman as FAs and drafting another 2 and developing them would be a good plan to turn things around.

  57. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, DE JCowser and WR LCarroo have gotten invited to the Combines.

  58. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

2 other guys to keep an eye on, both from Cincinnati, OT/OG Parker Ehinger and, WR Mekale McKay, got invited as well.

Curious to see the 40 time of McKay.
Had seen stats on him suggesting he was 6’5″/210 with a 4.45/40.
Extremely fast for his size if accurate.
Something the Combine will bring to light, once and for all.

  59. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Jaylon Smith/Myles Jack made the list as well?
Curious to see what that will amount to?
Hardly think Jaylon is ready to do much more than take medicals and interview.
Even the medicals are probably too early to make a difference, seeing as the surgery probably just occurred.

Jack may have something to offer however, at least from a medical eval perspective.
Doubt he’s going to participate in any positional drills?

  60. winderNo Gravatar says:

I wouldn’t concern yourselves to much about the draft. Baalke already has a proven track record of not being able to identify talent.

  61. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

We’re trying to help him out Winder, if he’s paying attention 😀
He’s clearly weaker on the Offensive side of the table.
Hopefully he and Chip can balance the scales in this debate?

  62. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit there’s a kid from Joe Staley’s alma mater, CMU playing FS.
Compares pretty closely to Eric Reid in terms size/speed.
He’ll be in Indy at the Combine.
Group 10/DB19 if you have a chance to catch him there.

    Kavon Frazier 6’0″/218
If he runs under 4.6 I’d consider him as a potential heir to Reid.
He’s carrying a RD5-6 Grade at this point so, he should come cheap.
    51 games/269 TKLs/16 PBUs/5 INTs

  63. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

“Frazier leaves Central Michigan with five career interceptions for 79 return yards and 269 tackles. A two-way star in high-school, Frazier was a very explosive running back with quick shifty hips that translates nicely into his ability to transition in coverage.

Superb size and knows how to enforce it on opposing players. Frazier brings an attitude to the secondary that puts all opposing offensive players on notice with his big-hitting ability. The tempo-setting safety with a physical and nasty demeanor, Frazier’s energy and passion elevates those around him.
Made big plays in key moments throughout his collegiate career, including a blocked a punt against Eastern Michigan this season and in 2013 he was also named MAC Defensive Player of the Week after he forced two turnovers against Ohio. Very aware of his surroundings on the field and supports the run fast and gets downhill.”
