It was a nation wide dump on Colin Kaepernick week. It’s gotten so bad, even your faithful steely-eyed scribbler has begun to feel sorry for the poor kid. If he stinks it up again in New York next Sunday night, mercy demands he be given a seat on the bench — while there’s still anything left of his psyche.
The official Niner word this week has been that Kaepernick is “in a slump.” By my reckoning, this slump has been deepening for going on two years now. That’s not a slump, it’s a career path.
The Giants have the number one rushing defense and the last place passing defense. Gee, what should the Niners do? Hint: it probably doesn’t matter. The Niners don’t run very well or pass very well.
From purely an entertainment perspective, we need someone else to criticize besides Kaepernick. After all, this whole team is filled with substandard players. Courtesy of GM Trent Baalke. C Marcus Martin, now in his second year, has been a Baalke draft flop. RG Jordan Devey was a desperation pickup from the Patriots, so he’s expected to be lousy, and he hasn’t disappointed. But that means highly touted draft pick guard Brandon Thomas must be awful if he can’t unseat Devey. Another Baalke flop. And how bad must Joe Looney have been if he actually got cut for lousiness? RT Erik Pears was a low rated journeyman player when Baalke signed him in FA, and he’s played precisely like that while he’s been here.
The only reason these O-line guys aren’t being criticized relentlessly is that they’re just lousy and they are playing as well as they can. Kaepernick, however, once was great, was perceived as a great one in the making, and now is not playing great at all. The fallen idol. A standard American favorite.
Of course, this whole mess of a team is the direct fault of Baalke and Jed York. But they generally operate in hiding, especially Baalke. These two are better fodder for the offseason, when there are no games to analyze and dissect. Especially during the two week Super Bowl hoopla, when York can’t possibly hide. He’ll undoubtedly be good for a lot of laughs and total bullshit then. One thing he won’t ever do is own what he’s done. He’s not man enough or wise enough to do so.
There are no big games this year for the 49ers, but this is a big game for the Giants. All of their games are big, since they’re playoff contenders. They blew two games in ridiculous fashion, otherwise they’d be 4-0, instead of 2-2. They can’t afford to let a bottom feeder hand them yet another ridiculous loss.
