Oooo! Ouchhh! Uncle! No mas!!
The 49ers absorbed their worst beating since the Mike Singletary era Sunday in Pittsburgh, getting squashed by the Steelers 43-18.
The game was a nip and tuck, see-saw 0-0 battle until the second Steeler possession, when Ben Roethlisberger discovered that nobody in the Niner secondary could cover Antonio Brown, who torched rookie CB Kenneth Acker all day long. And anybody else in the Niner secondary he felt like abusing. For the day, Brown had 9 receptions for 195 yards. Darrius Heywood-Bey and Marcus Wheaton joined in with 144 yards between them, giving the Steeler wideouts 339 yards for the afternoon. Roethlisberger had completions of 59, 56, 48, 41, 35 and 28 yards. Whew!
The 49er pass rush, not to be out done in ineptitude, contributed 0 sacks and 0 QB hits on the day. If Roethlisberger worked up a sweat, it would have been the only stains on his uniform.
On their part, the Steelers defense had five sacks, nine tackles for loss, eight QB hits, and five passes defended. Not too shabby from guys who were torched last week by the Patriots.
49er DB Antoine Bethea summed things up pretty well. “We need to clean up the things we did wrong & come out & play better next week.” Ya think?
This game was supposed to be a test for the Niner defense. Do they give grades below F? Next Sunday, the 49er offense gets a test against the Arizona defense. Let’s hope they perform with more distinction than their defensive teammates or this season will get long and painful in a hurry.
Former coach Jim Harbaugh was 11-1 in games in the eastern time zone, with his only loss a 2011 Thanksgiving defeat to the Ravens. Current HC Jim Tomsula vows to win the next 11 in a row to match Harbaugh.
It’s probably safe to surmise that the Jed York bandwagon, so full a mere week ago, has lost a few members after this debacle. And those still ensconced thereon are no doubt wincing a bit. Hey, cheer up York lovers! It’s only one game. The early season games can all be fluky. Plus, the team can’t get beat any worse, right?
