Talk Is Cheap

We are now half way through the offseason, and less than a week away from the 2014 Draft. Easy, guys! Hold back those yawns!

We’ll find out today whether the 49ers pick up the 5th year option on resident bad boy Aldon Smith. If they do, it probably means they believe Aldon is finally clued into the reality that he’s playing his way out of the NFL and a possible HOF career if he can’t stay off the sauce.

Or maybe they’re just terrified he’ll clean up his act and wind up playing in Seattle in 2015. Ten million might seem like a worthwhile bet that he’ll either stay out of trouble or flame out so badly he’s worthless elsewhere.

The Saints have cast their vote on the helpfulness of an extra two weeks of draft preparation by taking this weekend off and flying to Las Vegas to party. They said they were concerned with over-prep burn out.

There’s no such problem in my neighborhood. I can’t find anybody who even remembers there is an NFL, it’s been so long without one. It’s all about the NBA right now.

The NBA commissioner’s tough talk was nuclear enough to appease the league’s players and save this year’s playoffs, which was the primary necessity. When the season is done, we’ll see what actually happens and how far Donald Sterling is prepared to go to fight the attempt to disrobe him from his franchise. He’s certainly got the money to create a lengthy court battle. And at 80, what else is there to do that would be as entertaining?

All that’s really happened is a $2.5 million fine, which is pocket money to a billionaire, and a lifetime ban on attending games. There’s talk of forcing him to sell the team. What if he decides to sit down to a lengthy interview and divulge some inflammatory conversations that have taken place with his fellow owners in their private meetings? Are the other 29 owners so faultless their private lives could withstand any scrutiny? I just don’t see Sterling going meekly and quietly into the long black night.

Fortunately, by then, we’ll have lots of football to discuss. And can watch the ugliness from afar.

I think the Sharks must be coached by Jim Harbaugh. Each year they have a really good team, get to the play-offs and lose.

  2. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Lots of drama with Sterling.
It has been leaked out that he is fighting Prostrate Cancer.
I suppose that’s an attempt to garner sympathy but it doesn’t excuse his belief or actions.
If anything you would think he’d have an epiphany because he’s close to his “Come to Jesus Moment” and he’s going to a very hot place if his life’s actions of hate and bigotry has been as advertised.

Where’s my puppy? Ahhh. Good girl. SIT!

Who’s to say the Donald II won’t repent on his death bed? It worked for St Augustine. Well, not exactly that way, but you get the idea . . .

  4. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Los Tiburons have been choking for YEARS. Different players, different coaches, same result.

We have not yet begun to choke!

    Fukk the nba

  6. robNo Gravatar says:

Oh , and btw … go heat

  7. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

The Niners officially exercize Aldon Smith’s 5th year option.

While the prevaricators prevaricate, the astute ones make the right call.

  8. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

Excercise? Shit, that don’ look right either.

    HMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!! HEY ROB~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Heat? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

    Fukk the Heat!

  9. robNo Gravatar says:

    Ok chuck i agree
But next year we tag him imho

  10. robNo Gravatar says:

    Chuck ok lol

    I really have to post

    now on 😉

  12. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

ROB!! The 5th year options IS for 2015. We won’t have to tag (or re-sign) him til 2016. !!

  13. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    FLAROB!!!!

  14. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Seahags elected not to exercise their option on G/T James Carpenter so they committing $7 mil plus to him in 2015 when he becomes a FA.
Petey reached when he drafted this guy in the first round and he has not met their expectations.
Seahags will most likely have to replace 2 Olineman this season and another next year.
Makes you wonder if Seahags are targeting Iupati if the Niners pass on signing him in 2015.
They have a crapload of salary cap problems themselves which is the price of winning.

Sorry but it just seems like there is a malaise and lack of enthusiasm for this draft and the reason is the fact that it was moved back a few weeks and it’s thrown off our football clocks. That shouldn’t be, because this draft is loaded with talent.

Even last year you would look forward to 49er Draft specials on local TV. This year I have no idea when they’re airing because of overexposure.

I still think the NFL will see that moving the draft back was a mistake and put it back in April.

Right now I am more excited for the Warriors tonight and all the NBA game sevens than what might happen in the draft.
Perhaps by Tuesday the enthusiasm will return.

    Denny

It’s your day!!! The Run for the Roses.

Gotta root for the favorite California Chrome. Especially since the stable is Dumb Ass Partners (DAP), their logo is a fat donkey and their silks are Barney colors purple and green. Top that off with their assistant trainer Allan Sherman who happens to be a Niner’s fan.
I did not know that a horse from California had not won the Kentucky Derby in 59 years and that it is bad luck for a horse to have four white hooves.
You know I like clever horse names like I’ll Have Another.
This year it’s The Vicars In Trouble.
Anyway go California Chrome! Go Dumb Ass Partners!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QioUMmI0ToY

  17. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Vicars in Trouble? That’s *my* horse. That’s how I answered the phone this morning when Berger called. Gotta love priests, albeit English ones, getting their hands into altar boys. I mean mischief.

Also have to root for the Vicar as he’s ridden by the first female jock looking to win the Derby, Rosie Napravnik. Rosie won the Kentucky Oaks, her second Oaks victory in the last three years, yesterday aboard Untapable.

The horse might be Untapable, but I’d tap that redhead’s ass.

  18. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I just heard on CBS Sports Radio that the draft id being pushed back another two weeks.

The host who said the draft was being moved said he was kidding but I did hear what I heard and immediately thought, “Somebody needs to keep a suicide watch on Bullit!”

  19. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

And although I’m not a California Chrome fan, it would make for a nice story. His trainer Art Sherman used to gallop the great Swaps. Swaps himself was a Cal bred who won the Derby back in 1955.

And the owners seem like good guys with a great sense of humor. After much deliberation and consternation, I succumbed and added CC to my tickets.

He’s on my PK 4 (still alive knock on wood after first leg) ticket and will be apart of my trifecta box. 1,5,16,18,20

But I’m rooting for either the Vicar or Wicked Strong (20) to win the Kentucky Derby. Wicked was named in honor of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Plus he won me some money when he won the Wood Memorial.

But the track is playing towards a speed bias. Horses on or near the lead have won all the earlier races on dirt. Wicked comes from far back. We’ll see…

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Berger

Watch it or I’ll sic Rob Ford on you.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c72PuC7YW8Q

  21. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Bullit- I like Rob Ford. I wouldn’t want him for my Mayor but I’d love to run into him at the casino!

  22. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Who wouldn’t want to party with Rob Ford? I bet he made one helluva frat brother. But I worry, even I, would have trouble playing drinking games with Rob Ford.

  23. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Bullit, Vicar’s in Trouble currently 18/1 off his 30/1 M/L with just > an hour till Derby post. Stop betting all that money!

  24. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

They just interviewed Tony Danza, the #4 is named in his honor. He was sauced more then I am. I guess Tony was buying up all those $1000 Maker’s Mark mint juleps.

  25. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Seriously. The interviewer was trying to cut him off. Too bad they didn’t name a horse after Marilu Henner. Always loved that redhead back from her days with Danza on “Taxi.” Great sitcom. One of my all time favorites.

I’m sure you’ve heard the story before, but Marilu lost her virginity during the moon landing back in ’69. Those jokes are too easy for me. I’ll let someone else “open the pod bay doors…”

  26. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I bet on a horse who went off at 5 to 1. Problem was, he finished at 2:30!

    http://youtu.be/bcYppAs6ZdI

  27. BergerNo Gravatar says:

I had California Chrome, but almost everybody from around here did too. It was strictly a homer pick because I know nothing about horse racing. One of the owners is from Douglass County which is just south of Reno!

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The owner’s stable, Dumb Ass Partners should’ve been enough to root for California Chrome but what sealed the deal was Allan Sherman the assistant trainer 49er fan.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jjiWS__Mp0

  29. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Berger

    You rooted for California Chrome?
That was a donkey on his back not an elephant.
You voted for the Democrat’s pony.
    That’s the bi-partisan spirit.

    Efrem Zimbalist Jr died today.
RIP Mr The FBI (a Quinn Martin Production)
He was trying to hang on until Thurs to see who the Niners would draft.
Didn’t make it. He was 95.

  33. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

I started betting on the ponies back when I was only 12-years-old. This was all thanks to Mom. She picked me up at St. Jerome one early afternoon and told Sr. Madeleine she was taking me to the dentist. Instead, Moms took me to the Turf Club at GGF. Unfortunately for me, I won that day.

I’ve been hooked and broke ever since. Thanks Mom.

  34. unca_chuckNo Gravatar says:

    Good god skeebers. really?

  35. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Always been a fan of Efrem’s daughter, Stephanie Zimbalist. “Remington Steele?” That show paved the way for “Moonlighting” with Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd.

One of my all time favorite TV characters was Agnes DiPesto. Answering the phone with those rhymes was classic.

  36. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

Sorry. But the NHL playoffs are far more “do or die” then the NFL. This shit has me on the edge of my seat. Always has.

Berger beat me to the punch. He said Harbaugh was coaching the Sharks because of his propensity, nay, his lot in life, to lose the biggest playoff games.

    Mission accomplished.

  37. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

No need for the comma after the word “life” in my last comment. Should have left that blank. After life? That’s open for debate. I’ve had so much Bud Light tonight that I wouldn’t even broach the subject.

    No subjects, more beer please.

  38. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m all set for the Draft, as always.
Hosting a RD1 Party Thurs Night with several friends of varying team affiliations so, it should be a good night.

One of my friends is a Philly fan, (rabid douchebag like the rest of them)

Hoping like H3LL the rumor to trade up with Brother John happens.

He wants Fuller or Pryor, as would I.

Stealing someone he wants is what makes it all worth it, though we could be looking to garner a WR too.

Should be interesting, especially when everyone knows we have the ammo to pull it off.

  39. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

    Paul, “We’re going down swinging.”
Clippers > Warriors in a nutshell.

    I could give a flying F about b-ball.
Keep going guys. We’re rooting for ya…

  40. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

I don’t know much about BB, but that Steph from way downtown is lethal. Sweet ass jumper.

  41. robNo Gravatar says:

Time for a heat three peat !

  42. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Warriors simply didn’t have the bigs to matchup in Game 7.
Sequence of turnovers in 3rd quarter did them in (3 by Iggy).
Despite the post game on court hugs and congrats it got chippy.
Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are elite players that don’t have to be thugs but they are.

  43. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The difference between the Sharks and 49ers vs the Warriors is the Sharks and 49ers window to win a championship is open now and the Warriors are still trying to build that situation. Maybe next year with a healthy Bogut and Ezeli as well as all the youngsters being one year older. The Warriors are right there knocking on the door of being a championship contender. The Sharks and 49ers have opened that door but haven’t stepped through the opening.

  44. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

The 49ers’ window is still open but the clock is ticking. The team peaked in 2012 before Justin Smith’s injury in the playoff run sunk us in the Super Bowl. Unless we make some very positive player personnel moves in the draft this year the window might start to close very soon. Staying on top in the NFL is very difficult in the Salary Cap age.

  45. robNo Gravatar says:

We got this imo ! We have the coaching and the QB ! we also have as much talent

  46. robNo Gravatar says:

Oops…. as any team in the league ! The biggest issue now imho is hitting a home run when we go for a CB with our top pick this year !

  47. robNo Gravatar says:

Imo darqueze dennard if we trade way up

  48. robNo Gravatar says:

Or maybe kyle fuller later on !
