As suggested Thursday morning, the 49ers once again selected “Who?!” with their first round pick. If this version of Who works as well as the previous Who model, the team will have the second coming of Nobody.
I’m ransacking through whatever drawers I can get open in my brain this morning, trying to remember any mega-star small, quick receiver the team has ever had, and I’m coming up empty. If I add an inch or two to A. J. Jenkins height and add ten pounds, however, I’ve got myself a faster version of Jerry Rice.
Perhaps that comparison would be overly optimistic.
Anyway, the number one offseason need to upgrade the wide receiver corps now seems completed. The team has added Jenkins, Randy Moss, and Mario Manningham to the one man band of Michael Crabtree that contributed almost nothing during the 2011 playoffs.
Some people are extremely displeased with this pick, but who cares what Del Mar thinks? Apparently, the Rams were not happy, either, because they were set to take Jenkins with their first pick in Round Two.
If this Trent Baalke trend continues, in 2013 fans will actually groan if he picks a known commodity.
The big losers on Day One of the draft were the Bay Area members of the Colby Fleener fan club. The entire league passed on him, including his old coach, and it’s now expected that the Colts will draft him in Round Two and reunite him with Andrew Luck. If the Colts do not select him, though, he could experience some serious free fall.
Up next on Day Two of the 2012 Draft, the Niners will select “What” and “I Don’t Know” with their second and third round picks.
