Champagne Brunch

Back to work week for our intrepid 49er lads who tasted defeat last Thursday for the first time since mid-September. Even in defeat, however, Dame Fortune remained kind to the team by sneaking into Seattle on Sunday and inducing the Seahawks to barf a game against the Redskins, thereby making next Sunday’s game against the Rams an opportunity for the Niners to clinch a playoff berth for the first time since 2002.

IMHO, we will see champagne squirting hither and yon in the 49ers locker room shortly after 4pm PST Sunday afternoon, December 4th.

A victory Sunday would give the 49ers a perfect 3-0 sweep of the division opponents, all three victories coming at home. To complete a 6-0 division run, the team will have to go 3-0 on the road. After Sunday’s game, there is only one home game left on their schedule, the Monday Night game against Pittsburgh on December 19th.

Notably not attending next Sunday’s victory party will be Takeo Spikes, who took his 84 years in the league without getting into the playoffs to San Diego this past offseason to help enure the shit-canning of Chargers HC Norv Turner. With yesterday’s loss to the Broncos, mission accomplished. 85 years in the league without a playoff game. Who’ll be the next in line for Takeo’s services? Can we induce Green Bay to sign him this coming offseason?

Alex Smith will attend the party, for sure. He’ll be wiping the fizz from his eyes and holding up a memento jersey with two sets of former HC bus tire tracks on the back of it. He might even break out into an aw shucks giggle. Our humble leader. The QB who couldn’t possibly lead any team to the playoffs. Next up on the disdain list, the QB who couldn’t possibly win a playoff game.

It’s possible I’m getting ahead of myself. I mean, maybe they’ll lose to the Rams.

Back to reality, a loss Sunday would put the Rams, the pre-season favorites to win the West, a full EIGHT games behind the Niners, with four games left to play. Does any other stat out-demonstrate the awesome turn around the 49ers have made this season?

Starting with the Giants game three weeks ago, Jim Harbaugh has moth balled the jumbo running game and gone to a pass oriented scheme. Not sure if this is just an attempt to sync up the passing game for the playoffs or an attempt to lure playoff defenses away from Frank Gore obsession. We haven’t seen any “cute” plays in three weeks, either. Nor will we in the remaining five games. These gems will be saved for the playoffs. And you can be sure Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman will be concocting a few eye-openers during the remaining weeks of the season.

The reality is, if the Niners get the number two seed come January, they will only be two games away from getting into the Super Bowl. Winning the first playoff game is all important for franchise prestige, but winning that second game, most probably in Green Bay, would be a stunning upset. Still, it’s only two games. Anything can happen. In previous years these anythings were always bad, but this year, anythings have been very good to us. It’s a thing thing.

ESPN is reporting that Niner LB Coach Jim Leavitt might be on short list pf candidates for the vacant Kansas head coaching job. Kansas just fired Turner Gill after a 2-10 season. He had just completed his second year as the head coach.

Gill did a great job at Buffalo. He hasn’t done so well at Kansas. Somthing tells me he will land on his feet somewhere.

It sounds like Skeebers has panegyrized our losing ways. Be careful, the Phoenix could rise, maybe even in Phoenix, the week after we probably clinch the division.

    Berger

It takes more than 2 years to turn a program around espeacially in college where you recruit.
I really believe if you sign someone to a 5 year contract then you are giving him 5 years to work his magic. Unless a coach is totally inept and loses his team.
Gill will still be paid the $6 mil he is owed but what a waste of money for KU

Steelers looked pretty ordinary yesterday. Still should be a good test.
Tired of watching antics of WRs
such as Desean Jackson and Stevie
Johnson and then choke and drop balls at crunch time. Enough with the dance routines. Act like you’ve done it before and will do it again instaed of acting like you won the lottery. The NFL is populated with a bunch of a-hole jerks.

After some thought the NFL should be the “no fun league” and adopt the college rule with no orchestrated celebrations.
    Basically these celebrations are
taunting the other team and that leads to retaliation. It’s gotten so out of hand.
Kids see this and act the same so we are bringing up a generation of jerks.

You must have seen this video of Joe Kapp fighting Angelo Mosca.
    Both are ex CFL players

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kThLSiykiHY

    Both are 73 years old.
Those zany CFL guys. It’s a wonder neither of them had a heart attack or a stroke.

That’s a good one, Bullit. Nice right hand by Kapp. Clean knock down.

Props to you, Berger, for accurately predicting the St. Louis Rams’ Bradford-McDaniels Offensive Meltdown Mismatch this year. When you lose to AZ on your home field, you’re utterly effed, and the living have to envy the dead. Wow. Just… Wow.

I remember Joe Kapp with the Pats and Vikings, and in his coaching stint at Cal. He was one tough SOB. He’d likely deck a cheerleader if she pissed him off. Doubt he ever backed down from anything in his life.

Found some high quality old footage of the 49ers and Jets in 1971… forty years ago… John Brodie, the late Vic Washington, Ken Willard and company. Enjoy.

Grumpy- I didn’t expect the Rams melt down to be this bad. Their injuries are compounding matters.

  13. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

The Rams had a brutal opening set of games to boot.

Loved the Brodie bootleg. NO ONE expected that.

Berger I’ve been poking around the Draft Evals and realized former 9er Jeff Fullers’ Son, (Jeff) is a WR coming out of Texas A&M.

Interesting prospect, and, he’s already playing in a WCO for former Packer HC Mike Sherman.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

PFT says the Texans have worked out Jake Delhomme and Jeff Garcia
and one of them will be chosen to enter their QB battle with TJ Yates and Kellen Clemens.
Leinart can’t catch a break as this was his big chance to lead a playoff team and his season is over.
