R-E-S-P-E-C-T (just a little bit)

Harbaugh vs Harbaugh, Lewis vs Willis, Gore vs Rice, and Ravens D vs Niners D. These will be the story angles that will be beaten to death by the time Thursday’s game kicks off. We do not intend to flog these points here. Jim is better than John, Patrick is better than Ray, Frank is better than Ray, and the 49ers D is better than the Ravens D. End of story. Case closed.

It’s a late game, so the jet lag factor should not be a problem for the 49ers. What could be a problem is WR Torrey Smith. If he goes off like he did against the Bengals, there will be trouble in Niner City. Baltimore has lost three games they should have won, but those games were all on the road. They have not lost at home.

The Ravens have more at stake in this game than the 49ers do. A loss would knock them out of first place in the AFC North and have them again looking up at their hated rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Don’t worry guys, the 49ers will beat the Steelers in two weeks and put you right back up in the driver’s seat!

A Niner loss would reduce their margin for error in the battle for the NFC number two playoff seed to one game. And postpone their clinching of the NFC West division title by another week. Not exactly a do or die situation.

The 49ers are looking for national respect these days, though, and Thursday’s game will definitely give them an opportunity to muscle their way into the Elite Teams room. It will also give them what amounts to a playoff atmosphere experience. They had this exposure two weeks ago at home against the Giants and emerged victorious. This game is on the road, however, and with a very short week. A win here would be quite impressive indeed.

No one would have dared utter the thought as little as three months ago, but the fact is the 49ers have an edge at quarterback. Alex Smith is better than Joe Flacco. Smith reads defenses better, makes fewer mistakes, and completes more passes. Flacco is a lesser version of Terry Bradshaw. A 50% passer who completes an occasional bomb and is supported by a strong defense and a solid running game. The 49ers don’t allow solid running games from anybody, however, putting more pressure on Flacco and possibly leading to some completions to our guys, who have made a habit out of pilfering this year.

The 49ers have an edge on Special Teams, too, and should win the field position battle, like they have all year. Andy Lee and David Akers could very well be the MVPs of this game.

That’s the Outsider book on this contest, but bear in mind that it’s an unsanctioned book and could be a complete fraud. To guard against willful bullshit, we’ve called in FBI forensic math expert Charlie Eppes to run some algorithms on the likelihood of potential red and gold success this Thursday. So far, Charlie has the look of a guy who is missing an important underlying data stream. Hopefully, Skeebette will wander into the room some time between now and Thursday morning and make an innocent observation about turkey basting which will set the lights blinking furiously in Charlie’s brain, leading to an Expert Opinion.

Until such a plot turning moment, however, we stand on our hopeful outcome: 49ers win! They’ve earned our respect.

If we beat the Ravens in their house, on a super short week, the east coast will crepitate.

  2. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Last year was strange bad and this year is strange good. Aside from Harbaugh and his coaches, the one player who has made this team go is Alex Smith. Everyone else is performing pretty much near expectations, but he has made a quantum leap forward.

  3. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Packer offense is potent but their defense ranks 30th and their pass defense 31st. Depends on matcups but they might have trouble if they draw the Saints, Cowboys or Falcons who go downfield. Can you name more than 5 guys that play on the Packer D?

  4. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

A.J. Hawk, the guy they took instead of VD. The back of his jersey looked clean until Blount ran over him in your video yesterday, Bullit.

  5. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

The Packers will go as far as Rodgers carries them. He is like Montana in 1981, making a mediocre team into a great one all by himself. Except Montana had a better defense. The Packers can’t run that well, and their defense is no better than average on a good day, but can they ever pass the ball. Okay, maybe he is more like Marino in 1984…

IOW, he is money. But there is not much there if he goes down. In the playoffs, your best bet against the Packers is to beat the ever loving crap out of him and render him ineffective or sidelined. When we play them, Jimbo should dust off the film of Super Bowl 19 in the vaults and take notes. Mother Effer can’t pass with a broken arm.

  6. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Maybe Suh will rip it off on Thursday.

  7. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Not that I would advocate arm rip offing, but I doubt my concern would be expressed with much more than a “Tsk, tsk, what a shame.”

  8. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, if it comes down to GB, it’s all about ball control. Keeping Rodgers on the sideline is the best defense against him.

Detroit looks to get into a shooting match tomorrow. interesting to see how their pass defense handles it. They suffer the same fate the Niners do, though. GB (and the Niners stop the run so well, and get ahead, that teams go throw throw throw all game since they are behind.

Balt on the other hand doesn’t get big leads, so their opponents still try to run on them. Gonna be a fun set of games tomorrow. Wonder if Miami can put up a fight . . .

  9. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Yahoo Sports has reported that Luck has not enrolled for the Spring Semester at Stanford which is an indicator he’s entering the draft. Looks like Indy will get their 2nd QB of the decade.
Some are touting Matt Barkley as the better QB but I don’t buy it.
How can the Colts suck like they have just because they lost their QB? Their defense has already given up 300 points in 10 games whereas the Niners have given up 145 pts.
They had a decent receiving corps
that has been reduced to basically crap. Reggie Wayne has only one TD reception. Go figure.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

They’re announcing at 1pm PDT who gets awarded Kyle Orton. If Indy doesn’t make a claim they are officially doing the “suck for Luck”. That card will be revealed if they pass on their chance to claim Orton.

  11. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Orton has come out and said he wouldn’t report to anyone but the Bears. Not sure how that works, but he’d be turning down $3 mill if he doesn’t report to, say, KC or Hou or Indy.
    .
As far as Indy goes, the D can look a lot worse when the O is ineffective (sound familiar?). But, yeah, Indy’s not only fallen off the table, they’ve fallen off El Cap . . .

  12. barleyfreakNo Gravatar says:

Castigate me if you will, but I actually think Rice is better than Gore at this point in their careers. Won’t matter. We will shut him down. He is quite a threat catching out of the backfield though. But with Bowman and Willis roaming, I like our chances.

I actually think we match up better against GB than anyone else. It really is all on Rogers. If you can get him off his game (no small feat) and control the ball, the clock, they can be had. Sure they are unbeaten this year, but they have not played anyone as good as the niners.

  13. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

If castigating has anything to do with jock-hangers, NoFear’s your man for the job, Barley . . .

  14. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

BTW, McKlown to the Bears, and Orton to the Chiefs . . .

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

So Indy is going for Luck and unless they screw it up royally will have the chance to pick him.

  16. unca chuckNo Gravatar says:

Well, they have a 2 game lead on last place. . .

  17. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Berger is drinking, time to talk politics with unca! LOL! Just kidding unca, please don’t go there.

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Whitner plays a good Center Fielder for us. If we keep a lid over the top and get Flacco under some pressure, we take this game.

As Skeebers has reminded us, we are solid in all 3 Phases.
Having Fangio and Jim’s inside knowledge of Baltimore’s Staff doesn’t hurt either.
Cam Cameron is no Mad Scientist in terms of creativity.

Little Brothers’ fight harder, my money is on Jim to have the sucker punch that could turn this game in our direction.

Enjoy the game and, Happy Thanksgiving guys.

  19. robNo Gravatar says:

omg can’t wait until 8pm on thursday ! imo this might just be the biggest game of the year for us ! time for top ten teams to become top 5 teams … and REAL contenders !

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Happy Thanksgiving!
For all you turkeys out there,be careful or you’re likely to get stuffed.
Fearless prediction: If Niners hold Ray Rice to under 125 yds of total offense, Niners 23 Ravens 17.
It will be a tough game and a hard earned victory.
Whp’s got it better than us???
    NOBODY!!! GO NINERS!!!

  21. robNo Gravatar says:

    WE WIN 12-10

  22. robNo Gravatar says:

    DEL
what’s the line on how many times they show JACK HARBAUGH on TV tonight ?!

    50 ?

  23. winderNo Gravatar says:

Happy Thanksgiving all. May we crush the Ravens today, and may it be a total pounding.

  24. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

    Time to roast the birds.

  25. BergerNo Gravatar says:

    Happy Thanksgiving you all!

  26. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

27-6. The Ravens make us look like the Thanksgiving turkey.
    Happy Thanksgiving.

  27. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Rob

The parents won’t be at the game tonight so unless they show a picture or old video it’ll be zero.

  28. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

No help from the Lions: Boy Named Suh just got his ass tossed from the Packers game for a total effing idiot penalty.

  29. robNo Gravatar says:

    n-dumb-o-kong suh is a moron ! i’m glad we didn’t draft him !

  30. bigtimNo Gravatar says:

happy thanksgiving posters, well it looks like GB is killing the Lion cubs today,so another chance at equaling the pack goes to the way side, now the niners need to take care of there business.
speaking of there business if I hear Harbowl any more I am going to flip out, the only Harbowl I want is a Superharbowl wouldn’t that be a treat.
the way the Pack is playing there going to be a huge challenge if we were to meet in the playoffs, any way hope every one gets full to the brim with holliday fixins and enjoys the game
    BT

  31. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

I don’t know which turkey is bigger; the bird that’s in my oven, or my fantasy team(s)? Guys are either getting injured or turning the ball over resulting in negative pts. If I didn’t know better I’d say it was a conspiracy. My FF teams don’t even warrant a presidential pardon. Off with their heads!

  32. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Rob

I had the wrong info. Papa and Mama Harbaugh ARE at the game. They just met with their sons on the field.
They’ll probably show them about 15 times.
    Dallas just squeeked by Miami

  33. Del Mar DennisNo Gravatar says:

I read somewhere that tomorrow is the Harbaugh’s 50th wedding anniversary. I can’t even begin to fathom being with the same someone for 50 yrs. Hell, I can’t even fathom being with myself for 50 years.

5 more to go. Thank Christ the Mayans will intercede and save me from the agony.

  34. robNo Gravatar says:

we’re going to win this 13-12

  35. robNo Gravatar says:

alex has a rapport with him , but you don’t go to ginn there !

  36. RTFireflyNo Gravatar says:

Well, that bit dog whiskers. Alex looked like my old friend, Snyder got hurt and the right side of the line started playing “…ashes to ashes, all FALL DOWN” just like last year.
In short, the Niners got out-Harbaughed. They’ll be in big trouble in the playoffs if they have to play a team like the Ravens…on the East Coast on a 4 day week. Oh, and there really aren’t any teams like the Ravens in the NFC – defense, run game – except the Niners.
Going to go back to hibernating until week 3 in Jan. Home game against Dallas or New Orleans or maybe the Lions or Falcs.
The season starts then. When was the last time I had the enormous pleasure of writing that????
Happy Thanksgiving all – flippin’ New Mexico, already snowed twice, had near zero temps, and today it’s 75. Perfect high plains/mountain horse riding weather. Giddyapp!!!

  37. robNo Gravatar says:

remember , our 0-line still has a lot of growing to do !

alex smith played a good game today in spite of all the pressure

  38. BergerNo Gravatar says:

The O-line was terrible, the injury to Snyder, flying 3 time zones and playing in 4 days is a big factor. I think we beat the Ravens on a neutral field. Plus, I’ve watched Flacco many times and have never seen him this accurate for an entire game. Everything came together for them and they won at home by only 10.

  39. BergerNo Gravatar says:

Why didn’t Edwards cut inside on the interception. That was lame as heck watching him go behind the DB. he had good position to cut inside and catch that ball. I guarantee that is a TD with Jerry Rice, Calvin Johnson or Dez Bryant. RC Owens would’ve eaten that up in his era. I lost a lot of confidence in Braylon Edwards on that play.

  40. robNo Gravatar says:

we’re still a top ten team and will only get better !
the refs helped the ravens a lot !
in spite of the constant pressure we still could have pulled it off if we hadn’t made a few mistakes imo !
the bad so called penalty to take away our TD and the INT are a couple !

  41. robNo Gravatar says:

    BERGER
that was a bad play by edwards , i hated that one !
