49ers 9, Washington 0

As noted by our astute commenters, sometimes ugly can be beautiful, and this game truly was. Probably the most gorgeous ugly victory of the year.

Washington conjured up a squall for this game, which tilted the odds their way since nobody could pass worth a shit. That crippled Kyle Shanahan‘s offense without nicking Washington’s much at all. They’re a ground and pound team, while the 49ers’ ground game is more of a finesse and deception effort.

Each team missed a FG in the first half, and Washington drove down to the Niner 28, where Adrian Peterson was stuffed by Julian Taylor on a 4th and 1 play. The only other time Washington threatened to score, Peterson was again the victim, as Kwon Alexander forced him to fumble and Taylor (our hero) picked it up and rumbled ten yards before he was mercifully tackled.

Washington never got close again. The 49ers pitched a shutout and three second half Robbie Gould FGs made the final score seem like a rout. Sort of. Delusionally speaking.

The defense had three sacks in the game –  one each by Dee FordArik Armstead, and the close out sack by Nick Bosa, who showed some humor by doing a slip & slide across the rain besotted turf. Three sacks doesn’t sound overpowering, but Case Keenum only threw twelve passes in the entire game. Smart move. Or he’d probably have been carted off the field at some point, heading for the smelling salts tent.

As an added bonus to the day, our bird friends up north got pecked to death by the bird fellows from Baltimore. I gotta admit it was pretty hilarious to see Russell Wilson out dipsy-doodled by Lamar Jackson, giving the Seahawks a taste of their own medicine. Two offenses entirely dependent on QBs who dart around until somebody gets open. Jackson won’t last long in this league running around crazily game after game, but he lasted this game, pushing the Seahawks back a full game further in the NFC West.

The going gets tougher down the road, with games against the Packers, Ravens, Saints, and of course two games against Seattle. Just how real the 49ers are will be revealed during that run of bona fide contenders.

Seahags are not the team they used to be. They have won 4 games and the first two have been by one point over the Bungles and Steelers, the third was a one point victory over the Rams and then the other was a 4 point victory over the Browns. They beat Cards by 17 and have lost to Saints and Ravens.

Theyused to be unbeatable at home and have lost two games already at Century Link.

Looking ahead the Niners first play Seattle on 11/11 and should have Witherspoon back as well as Staley and McGlinchey and Juszczyk so they should be close to full strength.

They get Panthers at home and the travel to play Cards on Thurs night
and Halloween on a short week. That gives them 11 days to prepare for Seahags on Monday and a stretch where they then play Packers, Ravens and Saints. Looks like fun.
    1 days

    Lamar & Co are legit.
Defense is solid. Harbaugh plays to win, and doesn’t mind
    taking chances.
Unless we make a difference, NOLA/Baltimore look like the real deals.

Speculation this week will be if the Niners will trade for a WR.

Guys that might be on the trade block are Emanuel Sanders, A.J. Green, Devante Parker, Muhammed Sanu and possibly Keenan Allen if Bolts decide to fold.

Need a reliable veteran that can get open and get 1st downs like Anquan Bolden.

This is off the wall but would Lynch consider resigning Crabtree because he’s out there and a proven chain mover???
    Just saying…

  4. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Something for Lynch to think about.

Cameron Dicker is a sophomore at Texas. If he stays in school and is available in 2022 draft GM Lynch might consider drafting him to replace Gould. His long this year is 57 yards against Rice.

    This is “Dicker the Kicker”.

  5. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

AJG or Sanu for the right price.
Contract swaps would be great if able.

  6. bullitNo Gravatar says:

What about bringing Crabtree back? He’s a precise route runner that’ll get first downs.

Bungles are asking too much. Sanu for a 5th is doable for me.

  7. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Next up is CAR, minus Cam Newton.

Their D has done well last 4 games with sacks and turnovers. Their offense is offensive. Expect a W here.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Contain McCaffery and you beat Carolina

Niners open up as 6 point favorites

  9. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

I never felt Crabtree wanted to do what it takes to win Bullitt.
    No passion.
He and Sherman as team mates would be fun though?
Could change my mind if he’s not going cost is.

  10. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The curious thing is why Shanahan doesn’t have Jordan Mathews out there with some snaps.

The move that hurts was putting Kaden Smith on the PS and having the Giants claim him. The backup TEs are not receivers and are there for their blocking. Kaden Smith would another receiving option that could get you 15 yards.

Forgot about the bad blood between Sherman and Crabtree but most here
have learned to tolerate Sherman and even give him credit.
Crabtree is an unsigned Free Agent that would cost very little and certainly no draft capital.

  11. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Shanahan seems to have a more complicated offense than most. QB and receiver need to be in sync with post snap decisions that depend on the coverage, zone or man. Receiver has to know which way to break.

Maybe Mathews can’t grasp these routes yet. Some of the errors are on the receiver and if QB has to release early and receiver broke the wrong way INT’s happen. Last year Bourne screwed up and the TV guys blamed Jimmy.

  12. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Looking at the schedule GB-BAL-NO is when a loss will occur.

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Well Bullit – Take Sanu off the list.
    Fukn Pats again…..

  14. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

My point with Sherman and Crabtree has more to do with the motivational angle.
Sherman and Crabtree coexisting in the same locker room would be hard to avoid, in terms of who plays to win and, who wouldn’t be allowed not to.
See where things go in the coming days.

    BTW –
Put this kid on the radar for April. Saw him play the other day and, liked what he was doing.

  15. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Sanu for a 2nd round pick would seem a little steep but Pats pick is late and essentially a 3rd rounder which is where the Bungles drafted him.

In 8 NFL seasons Sanu has averaged 47 receptions and scored only 25 TDs which is about 3 a year.

Sanu is a #2 receiver but Pats need help and decided to make this trade.

  16. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I’d deal Solomon Thomas for a decent WR if the opportunity came up. With the emergence of Julian Taylor and Blair, and Kentavious still a possibility down the road, there’s just no room in the rotation for a guy with a contract like Thomas.

  17. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Armstead is having a very good year and he will be asking for big money next year which they can’t afford if they want to sign Buckner and Kittle which makes him trade bait.

Denver wants to get rid of CB Chris Harris so maybe a trade of Armstead for Harris and Sanders and maybe a Kendrick Bourne.

Armstead by having his best year is setting himself up for a big payday which the Niners can’t afford.

  18. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners are in similar situation as the Jest a few years ago where they kept drafting very good Dlinemen and eventually had to let some very talented guys go because they couldn’t afford them. Same with the Chefs last year having to let Dee Ford, Alvin Bailey and Justin Houston walk.

  19. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Denver is dealing WR Emmanuel Sanders and a 2020 5th-round pick to San Francisco in exchange for 2020 3rd- and 4th-round picks, per league sources.”

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Misdirection by Shanahan saying Niners had no interest in obtaining new WRs.

This leaves Niners as a non participant in Day 2 of draft.

it’s a good move as Sanders has been more productive than Sanu.

Best years were 2014 thru 2016 with Denver

  21. winderNo Gravatar says:

Not really excited about the Sanders deal. Pretty sure the Niners like the roster for the most part but Sanders is kinda old and hasn’t been able to stay on the field for awhile now.

  22. winderNo Gravatar says:

So that means we have our #1 pick and two 5th rd picks plus a 6th and 7th

  23. winderNo Gravatar says:

This move smells pretty desperate to me.

  24. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

What this move says is simple: No one, not even the coaches and FO, thought the team would come so far, so fast. They believe in Santa Clara, that they might even have a shot, if things break right, to run the table and win it all, THIS YEAR.

Given that, and seeing from the Rams and Seahawks how fast it slips away and the window can close, they’ve made the choice to go All In on 2019.

I don’t see it as exactly desperation, because it’s no longer strictly impossible, and because the future is not promised to any team (says so in the good book, you know, the NFL rules manual).

I’d say the odds are still maybe 4-1 against us. But a 20% chance of a ring is nothing to ignore. Gotta make the effort at that point.

  25. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The team lacks a realistic threat besides Kittle. This might open things up for Kittle and the other receivers on the team.

As for age if Sanders at 32 can give SF 3 productive years like Boldin dis at 33, I can live with that and it can jump start the passing offense.

Time will tell but they are pulling moves to win today.

And if you translate the picks given up this year it would be Jalen Hurd and Wishnosky with those draft picks.

  26. NJ49ERNo Gravatar says:

Still, they need to get a deal for CJ, maybe Ward?
Thomas and Trubisky could be the worst duo of players who have been linked to a Draft Trade for all eternity.
    Kissing your Aunt kinda stuff.

  27. winderNo Gravatar says:

I am all for going for it this year but I just don’t think Sanders is the guy to do it. He lost his #1 WR position to Sutton for a reason. Hopefully, he pans out and thrives.

  28. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Apparently, they got Sanders because they don’t think Trent Taylor is coming back anytime soon.

  29. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

And Sanders grades out better than any WR currently on the team. Which tells you all you need to know about the guys we have now.

  30. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Hope the WR wheel stops here. KS can’t get this team to the top with high draft pick WR’s yet. Effectively a 3rd for Sanders overspend for unexpected super bowl chase.

Pettis, Deebo, and Hurd need more coach time. Looks like the late 1st gets traded for a 2nd and 3rd next year. CB and OG/C with those picks.

TMoore and Ward are FS future. Reality is a bitch sometimes.

  31. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Hurd is gonna be a stud. Deebo? He’s shown flashes but now he’s hurt.

  32. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

This is a Pierre Delecto free site. Please refrain from using aliases and planting false trade rumors.

  33. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Niners have Kyle Nelson back as the long snapper this week and have cut Swanson.

Seahags trade for S Quandre Diggs of the Lions looking for Earl Thomas replacement. Diggs also went to DBU The University of Texas and is the half brother of ex Charger Quentin Jammer.

Seahags trying to reconstruct “Legion of Boom” but someone needs to tell Petey that it’s ancient history as lsong will test “12th Man” and their home field advantage.

  34. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

For the nostalgia buffs. 1989 LAR vs 49ers from the vault. Montana comeback in 4th Qtr for win. John Taylor 92 and 93 yd receiving td’s.

Was that the immortal Jim everett at qb? Niners 11-2 and Rams 9-4. Taylor 9 receptions for 263 yds.
