The 49ers got back on track by drubbing the hapless Jets Sunday, but they likely lost any chance at being a SB contender this year when all-world DE Nick Bosa tore his ACL and will be out for the season.
The new turf in Jersey wreaked havoc with players from both teams. For the Niners, in addition to Bosa, Solomon Thomas left with a knee injury, Raheem Mostert with an MCL sprain after opening the game with an 80 yard TD run, Jimmy Garoppolo missed the second half with a high ankle sprain that will probably take him four to six weeks to recover from, Tevin Coleman with some sort knee injury, and I probably missed some others.
On the plus side, Jerick McKinnon finally got to display his chops after missing the first two years of his Niner career. Especially humorous was his 55 yard run on third and 31! I can only imagine the anguish that poured forth with maximum outrage on some tortured Jets’ blog over this atrocity.
Jordan Reed caught seven passes, two for TDs, as he did his best to replace George Kittle. Kendrick Bourne finally made an impact, catching 4 passes for 67 yards. Newly acquired WR Mohamed Sanu chipped in with nothing and Dante Pettis put up another solid zero stat game.
I would praise the defense for giving up only two FGs before a meaningless garbage time TD, but that would imply that the Jets were a competent offensive challenge, which they weren’t, so we’ll settle for a simple round of polite applause.
The scary thing is the team will be right back on this same field again next week against the Giants. We can only hope that there will still be enough decent players left to carry forward the season by the time they get back to Santa Clara from this East Coast swing.
One last largely sentimental note, it was good to see our old friend Frank Gore still trucking along, putting up 63 yards on 21 carries. A reasonable showing without harming the Niners chances to win. Next time we see him will be when he signs a one day contract and retires as a 49er.
Taking a long look at the field I would consider sitting Kittle out
if he’s just a little gimpy. Just asking for further injury if the turf is indeed as bad that was reported.
NJ
Just have to go back to Candlestick Park if you want to see astroturf that was hard as concrete.
I do think artificial turf is a curse.
Good news: “Kyle Shanahan said Jimmy Garoppolo’s high ankle sprain isn’t severe, he will be week to week and he has a chance to play Sunday vs. Giants.”
Bad news: “49ers’ RB Raheem Mostert is not expected to play Sunday vs. the Giants due to his sprained MCL.”
Sac Bee reports the road trip from hell so far
First, the team plane at the San Jose airport Friday was hit on the tarmac and dented. So the team had to leave SJC and for an undamaged plane at San Francisco International. It led to a six-hour delay and they got to their hotel in New Jersey at roughly 4 a.m. Saturday.
Then, upon traveling to The Greenbrier for the week’s practices in West Virginia, the team ordered an MRI truck to the resort to get scans on Garoppolo, Bosa, Thomas, Mostert and Coleman. Only that truck broke down, forcing the team to wait until Monday night to try getting the MRIs done at a local hospital, which is why Shanahan didn’t have a definitive update on Bosa or Thomas’ injuries.
Suffice to say, things haven’t been going well for the 49ers in 2020.”
Adversity makes you stronger so these trials might have created some supermen.
Schefter just confirmed worse possible news, Bosa has a torn ACL and is done for the season.
Solomon Thomas also lost for the year with torn ACL
NFL not fooling around
“NFL fined three head coaches – – Denver’s Vic Fangio, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and SF’s Kyle Shanahan – $100,000 each for not wearing masks Sunday, and each of their teams another $250,000, sources told ESPN.
So that’s $1.05 million dollars in fines for not wearing masks.”
Wonder who gewts the fines.
That is bad news about both Bosa and Solomon. I think Solomon just lost any hope for a big payday. I wish them both well and hope to have a full recovery. Just think we’ve got 14 more games to play and we still have some pretty good players so they just have to step it up.
Per Lowder some activity today
“-Protected RB JaMycal Hasty on practice squad, likely to be promoted Sunday
-Bringing in RBs Paul Perkins, Karan Higdon and Austin Walter for tryouts, per @TomPelissero
-Resigning DL Alex Barrett to PS, per @mattbarrows
-Released CB Christian Angulo from PS”
Vega$ has the Niners as 4 point favorites despite the injuries and the unknowns of who might play.
Giants missing their top two offensive weapons in RB Barkley and WR Shepard helps.
My fear is that our guys will be timid, knowing the casualties already incurred vs the NYJ.
It’s now a mental thing, on top of the physical demands.
Not everyone can separate the 2.
Let’s just hope they’re able to get past the hurdles and get the W.
RIP Gale Sayers “The Kansas Flash” passed at 77 years old.
One of the all time great RBs who scored 6 TDs against the Niners in 1966 as a rookie and I remember watching that game on TV.
Indeed.
Met Gale and had pics taken with my kids in Canton for Jerry’s Induction.
RIP…
Sayers was a great player and an even better man.
Looks like we’ll see Verritt this weekend:
“49ers injury report for Week 3 at #NYJets via Kyle Shanahan:

OUT-QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), Kittle (knee), RB Tevin Coleman (knee), RB Raheem Mostert (knee), DE Dee Ford (back), LB Dre Greenlaw (quadricep)

Ah, Sunday football. What a blessed relief from Sunday everything else. Our religions are corrupted, our governments are corrupted, our values are corrupted. But for a few precious hours on Sunday, true and honest games take place that are real reality and not fake reality. They bring a touch of joy to getting up in the morning, grimly noting how old we’ve gotten, and laboring through the first few minutes of the day until the coffee is ready. Hallelujah and Amen, brothers of the inflated rubber cowhide leather covered prolate spheroid world!
Of course, a 49er victory makes the day even sweeter.
49ers inactives vs. NYGiants
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle)
TE George Kittle (knee)
RB Raheem Mostert (knee)
OL Tom Compton
DE Dee Ford (back)
LB Dre Greenlaw (quad)
CB Ahkello Witherspoon (hamstring)
Skeebs- truer words were never spoken your 8:12 post is spot on. And, what a stupid and tiresome world it has become. Yay football. Go Niners.
Scary situation at the Montana household

Detroit over Arizona. Hahaha.
Seahags pull of a win in last minutes.
They are alone at 3-0 on top of NFC West.
Costly win as S Jamal Adams left game with groin injury and RB Carson
has leg injury.
Observations
The Niners did not have to punt in this game. First time since 1993.
Niners might be auditioning long snappers this week as Kyle Nelson decided to dribble four snaps back to the holder.
Today was also the emergence of Brandon Aiyuk.
Jason Verrett looked played a decent game and should reeplace Witherspoon who has been getting torched.
New post is up.
