49ers 24, Rams 16

The grave diggers had to holster their shovels Sunday night in Santa Clara, as the 49ers limped out of the morgue to live another week.

Looking a lot like last year’s team, the defense shut down the high powered Rams offense, while the Niner offense clicked along smoothly and efficiently to build a 15 point lead with only four minutes left in the fourth quarter. Then, after a Rams score narrowed the lead to 8 points with two minutes to go, Deebo Samuel bulled his way to a first down which allowed them to run out the clock.

Amazing how different a team can look when it has TWO healthy CBs and a healthy QB. And the defense accomplished its job without registering a single sack or putting much pressure on Rams QB Jared Goff the entire game.

They even played the entire second half without super RB Raheem Mostert, but practice squad call up JaMychal Hasty filled in nicely, looking a little bit like a mini-Mostert in the process.

George Kittle led all receivers with seven receptions for 109 yards. The biggest catch was the fourth and two dart from Garoppolo that Kittle took 44 yards to the house and gave the Niners a 21-6 halftime lead. They only added three more points in the second half, which was disappointing, but it was enough.

It’s difficult to believe, in this injury-riddled season, but the guy who’s turned the secondary around is none other than terminally fragile CB Jason Verrett. He’s actually played three straight games without breaking anything or limping off the field. And he’s played lights out football during that time, including yesterday’s end zone interception of Goff which put a dagger in the Rams come back efforts.

Special kudos to our much maligned O-line. They did not give up a sack and RG Daniel Brunskill pretty much neutralized Aaron Donald – no small feat.

Next up on the seven game gauntlet against elite teams is the Patriots in Foxborough. A win there would keep hopes for the 2020 season in the realm of distant possibilities. And it would give the Patriots a 2-4 record, which would be a joy all by itself.

A valiant effort. Those 3 pts in the 2nd half made possible by a gutsy run by our wounded QB. At least three cheers, maybe four.

This game will shut up the Jimmy G isn’t worthy naysayers until his next mediocre game.
Jimmy G is the most complete QB this team has had since Jeff Garcia.
Kaepernick was a great runner but his passing skills were limited because he couldn’t read defenses. Basically defensive coordinators figured out schemes to limit him and part of that is why he’s not playing anymore in this age where running QBs are an asset. Successful mobile QBs look to pass first and run when lanes open up.

Team will get stronger when Sherman comes off IR (most likely in time for the Seahags and Packers).

What is true yesterday is Aaron Donald was neutralized by Shanahan’s scheme and solid play by the Oline.

One highlight from last night was when Garoppolo went on a hard count and drew the Rams off side and then exclaimed Oh Yeah!

Snap counts from last night’s game

The Niners came to play. It was a good all around game for us. We needed that.

  5. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

It’s amazing the way Shanahan/Lynch keep dragging in these unknown RBs and they proceed to kick ass.

  6. winderNo Gravatar says:

Most rb’s do well in our system. They seem to do well elsewhere too. I noticed McNichols(sp) is now Henry’s backup in Tenn, and he did well yesterday. I know that clock management really won that game for us but I still would like to see us air it out more. It seems our runs up the middle don’t have as much success as last year. That could be part of my memory failure but that’s how I see it.

  7. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The RB coach is Robert Turner Jr who was Mike Shanahan’s RB coach at Denver and the guy that developed Terell Davis.
I was sorry to see Rathman go but the running game has clicked with these finds.

  8. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Don’t forget Mike Davis who is starting for the Panthers because McCafferty is hurt.

  9. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Just when you think we’re getting well, we ain’t:

“Ben Garland (calf) and Raheem Mostert (ankle) will likely go on IR.”

Bullit I’d call us luckier than good last night relative to Jimmy.
Fortunately for us Goff missed more throws than Jimmy did.
Kupp helped with several dropsies as well.

Tip of the cap to the game plan of getting the ball out to help the OL too.
I don’t see Jimmy as the next coming of Joe, sadly.
He misses too many throws for my taste.
WIDE open Juice last night for example.

    He’s better than average perhaps?
    Happy to steal the W.

  11. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Garoppolo is 21-7 as a starting QB for the Niners.
Time will tell but Montana and Young had receivers like Rice, Owens, Taylor, Jones, Craig and Clark. Jimmy has only had Kittle and hopefully Deebo and Aiyuk will develop into reliable wideout talent.

Jimmy is the best QB this team has had since Garcia and he last played sor SF in 2003.

  12. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Lets hope he settles down Bullit.
We’ve had a LONG stretch of forgettable QB play to be sure.

I just can’t get the SB out of my head, with regard to throws that didn’t connect. Then, seeing more of it last night makes my head explode.

Shanny’s system may explain it to some degree perhaps but, I don’t like Jimmy’s mechanics one bit. Throws are constantly a tad off target or high which is a direct reflection on mechanics.
Not something he should be having to learn, or correct, at this point of his career.
Again, too hot & cold for me.
Knee/Ankle head games at play? OLine? Maybe.

Deebo and Aiyuk look like a future star duo for sure.
Just want to see Jimmy work more consistently with the deep throws.
He sucks in that regard quite frankly.

    Deebo responds

  14. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Matt Barrows has a new book out on the Niners that came out last week.

“If These Walls Could Talk: San Francisco 49ers: Stories from the San Francisco 49ers Sideline, Locker Room, and Press Box”

A very long title however which of you remember Owen Pochman?
Details of the drafting of Frank Gore.

This is a good read for any 49er fan and you will appreciate where the team is now compared to the dark cheapo days of despair and clueless leadership.

  15. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

This is a good read too Bullit – 😀
McCarthy and Nolan and a douche nozzle named Jerruh –

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Joshua Garnett announced his retirement from the Washington Football Club. Niners totally whiffed on him thinking he could be similar to David De Castro. imagine if he had played up to their expectations when drafted how different the Oline might be.

Will Shon Coleman ever see the field? He’s perpetually hurt.

  17. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Jets are sending OLB Jordan Willis to the 49ers, per source.”

  18. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Both Richard Sherman and Dee Ford are not likely to return until around the bye – Week 11.”

  21. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Hasn’t really done anything since college and has been hurt a lot recently. Just another body to fill out the roster.

  22. bullitNo Gravatar says:

    Trade rumors on two centers.

Alex Mack is in the last year of his deal and is 34 years old. Can be had for a 5th and a 7th round pick as ATL is cleaning house.

Billy Price former first round pick can be had for a 5th round pick.
He has been a diaapointment to the Bungles.

The question is do the Niners they have a legit shot to battle for the Super Bowl? If so they pull the trigger to strengthen the C position on the Oline.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Tomlinson’s contract was redone today to free up $3.5 mil in cap space

Is something cooking on the trade front?

  24. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Pats game is an afternoon game as the CBS National Game with Nantz and Romo announcing. Being the late game is a break for the Niners.

  25. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Dana Stubblefield was sentenced today to 15 years to life in prison for rape.”

  26. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Personally I think rapists should just be shot. So Fuck Stubblefield. He’s dead to me.

  27. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Next year’s cap will crater big time as revenue has fallen off a cliff. Even if we DON’T bring anyone in, we need to be thinking where we can cut.

The changes this coming off-season are going to be brutal. A lot of veterans are going to be scrambling trying to find minimum contracts. A lot of nobodies are going to get their chance. 2021 draft picks are worth more than any year in the last 20, and doing a good job on your UDFAs right after the draft will be critical instead of merely a footnote.

  28. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Daniel Jones had smooth sailing to an 88 yard TD tonight and he does a Steve Young. The diffrenece is Steve stumbled into the end zone and Jones made it inside the 10 short of the goal line. Big differnce is Young broke several tackles and Jones was untouched.

I love watching this play with Lon Simmons

  29. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

    RB Raheem Mostert (ankle)

  30. winderNo Gravatar says:

I guess that means Harris and Moore and anyone else they can pick up at Walmart. This year is just unf-ingbelievable and we aren’t even halfway through yet.

  31. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Antonio Brown is back in the NFC.
The rumor was he was going to the Seahags to poison their team chemistry.
Instead he joins Brady with the Bucs. Apparently Godwin and Evans two of the league’s best wideouts aren’t enough for Arians.

Will Antonio make it through the season?

On a sidenote The Aints will be without their top two receivers. Thomas is hurt and Sanders has tested positive for the Covid19

  32. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Hope I’m wrong, but as much as I was confident we’d bounce back and look good last week, I have a bad feeling about tomorrow.

  33. winderNo Gravatar says:

I don’t like our chances either. On a good day we have problems with mobile QB’s, with our defensive backfield short two starting safety’s we may be able to hold em off for awhile but I seriously doubt the whole game. This one definitely has the look of a loss.

  34. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Denver beat the Pats 18-12 by kicking 6 FGs Denver’s defense is ranked 14th and their offense is 29th
This is not the Super Bowl bound Pats team of the past but the Niner injuries are an equalizing factor.
Playing a clean game with fewer mistakes will lead to a win if Shanahan can come up with brilliant gameplan and outwit Mr Bill.

  35. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

49ers inactives for Week 7 game vs. Patriots:

    QB C.J. Beathard
    WR Dante Pettis
    CB Parnell Motley
    LB Kwon Alexander (ankle)
    S Jaquiski Tartt (groin)
    S Jimmie Ward (quad)

  36. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

Great game, beat the Hell out of them, but now Wilson and Deebo might miss some time.

In 2020, even when you win, you lose.

  37. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

“Kyle Shanahan said it looks as if RB Jeff Wilson has a high ankle sprain.”

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Good win. What Wilson did was very unexpected and it’s unfortunate he got hurt. Next man up. Hasty looked good and McKinnon didn’t get snaps so he should be fresh.

Tonight’s game will be interesting and Seahag defense is a shell of what it used to be. Maybe Cards and Seahags will beat the hell out of each other.

  39. bullitNo Gravatar says:

When Verrett came off the field hurt in the first quarter I thought that was it for him but he bounced back and played the rest of the game at a high level.

The backup safeties played so well you didn’t notice that they were backups.

  40. winderNo Gravatar says:

This one surprised me. I didn’t think our defense would play so well. They were amazing. A great 49er win and the way we did it was so refreshing. We stomped em in every aspect of the game. Wilson is a beast.

  41. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Down go the Seahags in OT as they give up 37 points to the Cards.

If Niners outscore Seahags next week we will be only one game behind.

Starting RB Chris Carson left game in first quarter with foot injury
    and didn’t return.
