49ers 20, Rams 7

It appears to be official: the 49ers are BACK. The only undefeated team in the NFC and atop the standings in the NFC West.

For the second week in a row, they dominated the TOP, this time by 39 to 21. The running game didn’t do much damage, and the passing game was efficient but unremarkable.

But this game belonged to the defense. They held the Rams to 157 total yards. A mere 48 yards passing from Rams QB Jared Goff, who was sacked four times. Three fourth down stuffs, one on a remarkable goal line stand where they stopped the Rams twice from the one yard line. And not a single third down conversion the entire game.

Jimmy Garoppolo continued his ragged ways. Sometimes great, sometimes not. But one stat that’s hard to ignore: he wins games. Sunday’s victory ran his record as the 49er starter to 11-2.

And the team should only get better. In a month, they’ll have their starting tackles back, plus WR Trent Taylor and FB Kyle Juszczyk. And CB Ahkello Witherspoon, who’s been  adequately replaced for now by Emmanuel Moseley. Just in time to face the Seattle Seahawks in a November battle for NFC West supremacy. Deja vu to the 2011-2013 seasons.

The rise of the defense to the top of the NFC is entirely the product of a suddenly superb pass rush. The secondary has gone from a liability to a strength. And it’s contagious. Even mostly useless Solomon Thomas had a key sack yesterday. A bona fide one and not the occasional garbage sack near the LOS on a scrambling QB. Arik Armstead is playing more like a high first round draft pick is expected to play.

It’s still too early to forecast where this team might eventually wind up. But only a rash of injuries seems capable of derailing them now. They are definite contenders for the postseason – now and into the future. The basement days have ended.

Don’t overlook the Redskins and the Niners are 6-0.
Reinforcements are coming and even if they only win half their remaining games that puts them at 11-5 but 12-4 and 13-3 seem more likely.

As noted earlier Shanahan/Lynch has built this team right with solid foundation and avoiding spending gaffes like OBJ and Antonio Brown and to a lesser extent Jalen Ramsey. They are getting the most of the talent on the roster.

Also LS Kyle Nelson should be off his suspension in the next two weeks.

It was amazing watching Goff do his best Jim Everett imitation at the end of this game – those last passes were ugly and weak. He just wanted it to be over. When a defense can totally demoralize the opponent like that… Very impressive.

Shanahan and Saleh totally outcoached Sean McVay yesterday. I cannot *ever* remember watching a game where a team was completely shut out on third and fourth down, zero for the day. We still had our flaws and mistakes, but after the first drive, it did not matter in the least. The Rams were never in this game; it just took a quarter and change for them to realize it. After that, it was nothing but pain for them.

This one was sweet for 49er fans after all the frustration of the last five years.

Here! Here! Oh Grumpy one. 😀

Huge win at a perfect time. Seems like we are just as good on the road as at home. Been a long time.

  5. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Staley was working out during warmups along with Witherspoon.
Possibility they might be back in two weeks for the Halloween game against the Cards.

The defensive line was collapsing the pocket and swallowing up Goff where he was extremely uncomfortable. Made him into “Chris Everett”.

  6. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Return dates for Niner’s injured players (per Maiocco):

    CB Ahkello Witherspoon
Possible return: Oct. 27 vs. Carolina

    OT Joe Staley
Possible return: Oct. 31 at Arizona

    OT Mike McGlinchey
Possible return: Nov. 11 vs. Seattle – Dec. 1 at Baltimore

    FB Kyle Juszczyk
Possible return: Nov. 11 vs. Seattle – Dec. 1 at Baltimore

    WR Trent Taylor
Possible return: Any point after Nov. 17 vs. Arizona

  7. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    You forgot Verrett Skeebs.
    Injured reserve: Before Week 5
Possible return: Any point after Nov. 24 vs. Green Bay

Like Ward, it’s more about the over/under, for when either will return to IR.
Smart money probably suggests ‘how many games’ can either stay active?

  8. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

KStreet too – Be nice to have him added to the DL rotation.

    DL Kentavius Street
    Injured reserve: Before Week 1
Possible return: Any point after Oct. 31 vs. Arizona

You have to give credit yesterday to three guys who’ve been in the doghouse of the Faithful. Jimmy Ward played a very nice game as did Solomon Thomas and Armstead has been playing at a high level for most of this season making impact plays.

  10. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Success breeds 2nd life for those three. Getting close to salary cap if AA, Ward, and Thomas kept. With late round picks hard to draft a replacement also.

KS and GM know what they have to offer. What are the odds of a replacement sticking and matching them in talent and skill. We have the team to win now.

Team chemistry is high and pushing performance to levels not imagined for them. I think all three stay unless a draft replacement pushes them off roster.

  11. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Stating the obvious. In 2020 we have a late 1st and a late 3rd. Late 1st goes OL. My opinion of course.

  12. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

IOL or CB for me too Bakkentom with next years’ 1st

  13. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I’m anxious to see what, (if anything), happens with our roster before the Trade Deadline passes.

  14. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Philly is likely looking for Secondary help and appears to be balking at the price of Ramsey.
Jimmie to Philly? Verrett? Thomas elsewhere?

  15. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

We got very lucky with our record and draft position last year, AND Bosa at #2. Won’t happen again.

Draft odds not in our favor anymore. Have to nail the one high pick in 2020. Choose wisely.

At least QB and edge are nailed.

  16. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Another player that was heavily criticized last year and performing admirably because he is healthy now is C Weston Richburg.
Last season he stuck it out with an injury and at times was beaten as an end result but this year he is finally healthy and producing at a high level. Right now he is the anchor of this Oline without Staley and McGlinchey.
Suddenly the talk has stopped that he is overpaid and not living up to the contract he signed. Richburg and C is no longer a position of concern.

  17. robNo Gravatar says:

Power ranking being what it is we’re ranked from 2,3, in most of them .

” Despite 5-0 start, Jimmy Garoppolo has been uneven. Once he’s had more time to grow with unfamiliar receivers, Niners could really flourish.”

  18. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullitt Weston has regained his cred. I am watching the college prospects for his protege however.
Likely will Draft him next year.

  19. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

    Tyler Biadasz Wisconsin?

  20. bullitNo Gravatar says:

That’s the Center I have my eye on.
He might be there towards the end of first round. He’s the anchor of the Wisconsin Oline.

A sleeper is Texas OG Parker Braun. He’s a grad transfer from Georgia Tech who was All ACC and came to Texas to refine his pass blocking. He can probably be had in rounds 4-6 next draft.

  21. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The Chefs might regret not keeping their elite pass rushers
Dee Ford and Justin Houston. Not enough pass rush has exposed their secondary. Sound familiar?

  22. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Andy Reid’s Achilles Heel. He’s brilliant on offense, but never puts together a good defense.

  23. bullitNo Gravatar says:

How long has it been since the Niners have been a 10 point favorite for a Eastern Time Zone Road Game?

That’s what’s happening for Sunday’s game against the Redskin Peanuts.

  24. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

If K Street could ever get on the field and prove himself, we’d have trade material up the wazoo.

  25. bullitNo Gravatar says:

The 49ers pummeled the Rams on Sunday and the Rams hit the panic button today.

Rams put CB Talib on IR and traded the other corner Marcus Peters to the Ravens for a 5th round pick and a backup LB.

They also traded an undisclosed draft pick to the Brownies for C Austin Corbett.

Going into game 7 Rams are missing both starting CBs and 3/5 of their Oline from last season. Hard to win when both of your corners are backups.

    Panic time in SoCal.

  26. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Rams have thrown in the towel after our thrashing at their home.

Rams traded Marcus Peters for nothing. Egads. Rams picked up an OG/OT on the cheap from CLE for 2018’s #33 pick.

CLE in 2018 had the best draft capital of all time. Wasted on Corbett. Also Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward, and RB Chubb I believe we’re their top 4 picks. Make of it what you will.

  27. SkeebersNo Gravatar says:

Not so fast boys: Rams trade for Jags’ CB Jalen Ramsey.

  28. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Not so fast, Tommy boy. Rams traded two 1st round draft picks for jalen Ramsey.

  29. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

JonnyDel requiem for bad ass bill Walsh like steamroller. Okay, so I embellished.

  30. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Ramsey cost the Rams 2 firsts and a 4th and they have him under contract only through 2020. Perhaps they mortgaged their future with the Ramsey trade.

2020 Rams salaries Jared Goff $36 mil, Gurley $17 mil, Cooks $17 mil. Woods $9 mil, Higbee $9 mil, Aaron Donald $25 mil and now Ramsey $14 mil. That’s $127 mil for 7 players and not that much for the remaining 46 players on the roster. Pure salary cap hell and a helluva problem.

But that’s why I say Phuck The Rams!

  31. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

What he didn’t say is obvious to us all.

Solomon Thomas will play out his 4 yr rookie contract. Then he is a free agent. Curious to see if AA is on team after this year. 12 mil per year is a lot of chalupa.

  32. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Yeh but…Roger wants the LA Mkt to prosper Bullit.
    Beware the Great Equalizer……Officiating.
Non PI call last year in NOLA got them in once.
Can’t help but think there’s a Vegas Viceroy named by King Roger to steer the desired results.
Last night in GB? Phantom calls for hands to the face?
Give me a fuk’n break already.

  33. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Are there any grown ups in the Rams FO?

  34. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Ramsey and Kwon Alexander make the same per year.

I don’t want to think about sheet like this anymore. Crown Royal on the rocks anyone.

  35. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

NJ, LAC is down there. We are the west coast now. Biggest market.

LAR is a train wreck. Gurley has a dead knee and diminishing returns is his prospectus. Hitting on 1st and 2nd round picks is the path to success. LAR giving them away like candy.

LAR will soon be yesterday’s news and soon forgotten. Fickle finger of fate, or childish stupidity.

  36. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

No reason to wish them well from our perspective Bakkentom.
Hope they crash and burn but….Roger and the Billionaire Boys Club, of which Kroenke is a member, have a media Mkt in LA to cash in on now.
Kraft pays the requisite fees obviously.
    Does Jed? 😀

  37. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Elitist, out of touch, crony-capitalists NJ. In this age of populism I think the public is ready to rip their heads off and sheet in the hole.

That business model doesn’t sell anymore. We need to continue the ass kicking and eventually the powers that be will admit defeat and cry no mas.

Everyone loves a winner. Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. Am running out of tired cliches but you know where I stand. If the matches are not competitive anymore, even Roger can’t be bribed. Money talks and we are the future.

  38. bullitNo Gravatar says:

NFL abandoned LA for over 10 years so not so sure it’s all that important.

The Rams are going to look like the Brownies next year. A couple of star players and a bunch of scrubs.

The math says if you have $60 mil to pay 46 players you can’t even afford a decent FA.

  39. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Bullit I think they’ve (Goodell & Co) finally landed the Owner they want. New crib, original franchise etc.
They’ll do all they can for Kroenke, along with realigning the NFCW in the West.
Call me a skeptic. I find the product extremely painful to watch now.
Threw in the towel last season on the Sunday Ticket, and actually, enjoy waiting for the Game Pass replay. All the BS removed.

    My theory is….throw more flags.
    Review more plays.
Sell more beer, pizza, and pickup trucks. 😀

  40. bullitNo Gravatar says:

I’m convinced the Rams are in a downslide.
The last first round pick of the Rams was Goff in 2016.
Their next first round pick is in 2022. Even Pats dabble in first round on occasion and don’t go five years.

Rams keep acquiring problem corners in Talib, Peters and now Ramsey.
The common theme among these 3 are they are talented but think about themselves first before the team. Rams say they are determined to sign Ramsey long term. It will cost them around $20 mil a year for a team that’s already salary cap strapped.

Prognosis for Rams is continued slide because they can’t field a decent team due to overspending.

Not much Goodell can do if your team is going down the toilet. If you
don’t believe just ask Jerruh and the Cowgurls.

  41. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Fun times ahead in the NFCW Bullit…
    How’s it go?
    Fuk the Rams?

  42. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Let’s NOT forget the other team in LA.
    Jolly Roger has options ;-D

  43. bullitNo Gravatar says:

On Sunday Rams didn’t have home field advantage

At a minimum 40 to 60% red in the stands from what crowd shots Fox showed.

LA fan base is the most fickle in the NFL.

  44. bullitNo Gravatar says:

Dodging another bullet, ex Niner Trent Brown has been accused of repeated domestic violence.

The Raiduhs paid top dollar to lure him to Oakland. Gruden/Mayock can’t put out their dumpster fire.

  45. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

I was quite pleased to see our colors in LA in those numbers Bullit.
The new stadium will attract big celebs with money to burn.
PSLs is where it’s at for Herr Goodell.

  46. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

It’s all about the Benjamins in this game..
    Hogs get slaughtered.

  47. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Wow, political correctness to the extreme here. Fickle ain’t the word for the LA fanbase.

Kroenke is an elitist. Born into money. Married into more money. Why he made a big NFL investment into the LA Basin is naive elitism on display. Maybe he is stuck in the 1980’s.

LA Basin is the epicenter for legal and illegal alien displacement of the 1980’s middle class blue collar
population that played by the rules. Per capita wages of middle class occupations driven down. Aerospace left the area as well.

Current fanbase has more allegiance to soccer than NFL. Kroenke deserves to take a loss. At world cup type soccer games there the star spangled banner was booed.

Fuk Kroenke and Fuk the Rams.

  48. bakkentomNo Gravatar says:

Rams had a need to keep Marcus Peters with Talib IR’d. Starters of Peters and Ramsey.

They gave away Peters cuz they could not fit him into the salary cap?

  49. bullitNo Gravatar says:

If you believe Neon Deion he says Ramsey won’t sign a contract with the Rams unless he gets Kalil Mack money ($23 mil/yr).
Otherwise the Rams sent 3 draft picks for a 18 month rental which is a very steep price.

In case you aren’t convinced the Rams are a cluster#uck their starting Safety John Johnson was placed on IR today, The Rams are replacing 3/4 of their secondary in playing the Falcons.
They will be without Talib, Peters and Johnson after adding Ramsey.

  50. Grumpy GuyNo Gravatar says:

I don’t think the Rams will HAVE the money to pay Ramsey along with the rest of that team. And I really doubt any corner this side of Deion and Jimmy Johnson is WORTH that kind of money.

I read this as the Rams are afraid their window is closing and are taking a home run swing for the fences in 2019-2020. I think they’re going to whiff and be a total wreck by 2021.

  51. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Grumpy it’s part and parcel of the entire Marketing strategy IMO.
Goff was a ‘build the franchise’ center piece for LA.
The new crib, expectations for those PSLs etc.
It would be hilarious, to see a fire sale of sorts, if Snead/Kroenke can’t keep the ‘product’ entertaining enough to sell said PSLs.

Given the fickle-ness of the local crowds, they’ll have to appeal to high society (Corporate Sponsors) to float the investment.
I can see SBs going to LA exclusively, as a ‘destination’ address for the Corporate Elites, for years to come.

NOLA had the ‘built in’ party atmosphere to compliment the Superdome.
What’s in the cards for Kroenke-town?
Hookers and blow on Jerruhs’ bus?

  52. NJ49erNo Gravatar says:

Last thing they want is what happened Sunday, with all the 9ers fans in their ‘home’.
Snyder is having that problem in DC.
When you run your product aground, the ROI disappears.

Friends of mine have had to unload NYJ/NYG season tickets that have been in their possession for generations. Need to have a 2nd mortgage to keep them.
The league appears to be moving into Corp/high society sponsorship levels.
    Average Joe’s go home.
    No more tailgaters.
    No more rowdies.

Take a limo. Take an Uber.
Sell those $15 beers and $8 hot dogs inside.
    Business write-offs as entertainment too.
    Hence, the sterilization of fandom.
Nilly Vanilly faux football entertainment, Fantasy League-style.

Have a yellow flag, and another $15 beer, while we review the last play, even though the 40′ tall HD JumboTron already made it obvious.

  53. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

Bakken, who isn’t an ‘elitist’ in the NFL ownership group? The Rooneys? The McCaskeys? The Packers? Mike Brown? Most of the teams that were family owned, like, say, the Morabito 49ers, are gone.

And all the ones left are ‘elite’. Robert Kraft, Jed, Jerry, Dan Snyder, on and on. ALL the owners have more money than any 100,000 people have combined. Well, except for Prince Valiant. What’s your point? That the refs will favor the ‘elite’ owners?

The LA is suddenly the playground of the NFL elite?

  54. Charlie KruegerNo Gravatar says:

NJ, there is NO WAY the owners would agree to sending the Super Bowl to one location. No way in a million years. The payday around that for the chosen few owners is a cherry that no owner will give up on.

To say these owners aren’t ego-driven is the understatement of a lifetime. ALL of the owners want that game on their field.
