The 49ers wrapped up their exhibition season with a win over the L.A. Chargers, running their record to 2-2. WR/Kick returner Victor Bolden locked up a roster spot by blowing down the field for his second kick return TD, this one a 92 yard punt return. This guy is fast.
CJ Beathard had his own heroics, zigzagging down the field on a 62 yard TD run.
The rest of the 49er scoring was mostly courtesy of the Chargers generosity — two fumbles and three interceptions.
The most important stat of the game was who played and who didn’t. The team sat 33 players, either to protect them from injury for the regular season or to protect them from injury so they can be cut today or tomorrow.
Between now and some time Saturday afternoon, the Niners must trim the roster from 90 players down to 53. A lot of blood on the tracks. They’ll need more than one Turk to handle this year’s pink slips.
Should be a fun weekend around the NFL, as 1,184 players get pushed out on the street, followed by 320 getting a reprieve by signing up for Practice Squad duty. Lots of bodies coming and going. By next Monday, we should finally get a clear picture of just who the 2017 49ers are.
Of the players cut, veterans can sign with anybody. But everyone else has to pass through waivers first. Only Cleveland has a higher dibs right to claim someone than the Niners. It won’t be a surprise to see GM John Lynch pluck a few guys from other teams and bring them to Santa Clara.
In addition to Bolden’s punt return, the other high point was a 49er TD on the ground. Some guy had to get behind Hightower and push him over the goal line, but hey. It was a run play and they scored.
I wonder if there is a QB cut and the Niners really like him that they’ll pick him up and go with 3 QBs.
Don’t think Barkley makes the team because he didn’t get in yesterday.
3rd stringer Mullens has a long way to go.
Barkley has been released.
“Jets trading DL Sheldon Richardson to Seattle for WR Jermaine Kearse and draft considerations. Seattle now has picked up former 1st round picks — Sheldon Richardson (Jets), Dion Jordan (Dolphins) and Marcus Smith (Eagles).”
NFC West just got tougher to compete in.
Seahags have traded WR Jermaine Kearse for DL Sheldon Richardson.
Looks like Seahags are the winners in this trade.
Just another reason to hate Seattle. That was a hellava pickup. Our run game just got a little worse.
Ravens just released G Zuttah.
Confirms that he might be the player he once was
Kapri Bibbs cut. Didn’t we give Broncos a 4th round pick for him?
Hightower gets the pink slip.
Seattle trading Tramaine Brock to Vikings. Traveling man.
No surprises so far
So CB Will Redmond is cut. A third round pick of Baalke with ACL problems which he couldn’t overcome.
Another wasted “Baalke” pick showing how truly incompetent of a GM we had. The number of squandered draft picks set this team back.
A recently deceased Philadelphia Eagles fan had one last request.
He requested 6 Eagles players to be his pallbearers so they could let him down one last time.
“The 49ers are releasing Quinton Dial.”
Pats are trading QB Jacoby Brisset for WR Phillip Dorsett of the Colts.
Seems like they are sticking with Garrapolo for the long term
RB Joe Williams to IR with an ankle sprain. Stashing him, obviously.
Jeremy Kerley cut.
Alex Boone cut by Vikings.
Temporary final cuts: DL Sen’Derrick Marks, LB Austin Calitro, WR DeAndre Carter, TE Cole Hikutini, QB Nick Mullens, DL Noble Nwachukwu, WR DeAndre Smelter, OL Darrell Williams Jr., WR Aaron Burbridge, DL Chris Jones, DB Don Jones.
Guard Joshua Garnett (knee) goes on season-ending IR
26 rookies on the roster. All the draft picks except Joe Williams, who went to IR.
I hope they put Burnbridge and Hikutini on the PS. I think Mullens will be on it unless they pick someone else up.
49ers have claimed DE Xavier Cooper from Browns.
Vikes have claimed TE Blake Bell.
Bell was only 49er claimed by anyone, and Cooper was the only guy Niners claimed. Hmmm. Grade of F for scintillating entertainment.

Steely Dan will always be a good memory
Hikutini and Smelter back and on the PS.
The last remaining fanboys are still lamenting on Kap’s unemployment.
Steve Logan weighs in and sums it up. All about ability as a college QB not translating into NFL.

Defensive Coordinators took away what worked and made guys like Johnny Manziel, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, RG3 and Kap obsolete.
That’s why they are mostly out of the league
8 of the PS players, 2 more to come.
QB Mullens
WR Smelter
WR Carter
TE Hikutini
OL Williams
OL Flynn
DL Nwachukwu
CB Asa Jackson
Redmond still hanging on for now – Same for Prince Charles….
Cornerbacks Will Redmond and Prince Charles Iworah, who were waived/injured on Friday, cleared waivers and revert to the 49ers’ injured reserve list.
Seems we’ve added another RB to the PS as well –
In addition, the 49ers agreed to terms with running back Jeremy McNichols (Boise State) to the practice squad, reports the NFL Network. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut McNichols on Saturday. McNichols gained 79 yards on 24 carries for Tampa Bay during the exhibition season. He was drafted in the fifth round (No. 162 overall).
What, no shayne skov
He’s his own revolving door Winder – Got word from The Turk on Friday –
1:33 p.m. — The 49ers released linebacker Shayne Skov, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area. The 49ers signed Skov, the former Stanford star on Aug. 17, after placing rookie linebacker Donavin Newsom on injured reserve. The 49ers have cut Skov five times since signing with the club as an undrafted rookie in 2014.
Near as I can see, he’s still out there unsigned too….
Skov can’t be practice squad eligible as he’s been around for over 5 years
I stand corrected
OK Skov has been around for 3 years, this would be his fourth season
Seems like our front office is showing a lot of loyalty to the players. With all the cuts made the last few days we made only 1 waiver wire pickup. The players are gonna buy into that.
New uniform numbers for those keeping score:
Matt Breida – #22
Victor Bolden Jr. – #17
Kendrick Bourne – #10
Ahkello Witherspoon – #23
Lorenzo Jerome – #26
Cards signed Andy Lee who will now also be Phil Dawson’s holder.
Arians must be a big fan of the Niner kicking game under Harbaugh.
Still think Pinion was a bonehead pick by Baalke.
Nothing special about Pinion who is an average punter.
Johnny Hekker the all pro punter for the Rams was undrafted as are most punters and kickers in the league.
Last year the Bucs squandered a second round pick on a kicker Aguayo
and he is no longer kicking in the NFL in his second season.
This team will finish with a 5-11 record improving on last year’s debacle.
It’s the Jest and Niners looking to draft Sam Darnold and 5 wins won’t get them to the first pick.
Long season and maybe someone else will emerge as the top pick.
New post is up.
